broke 10 k today i will be doing some maint on the sled and will report . last comp test was 135 . what no are chain case bearings . gonna replace so i don't worry . i have one clutch roller a little loose . but it runs better than ever . getting 12-13 mpg :yrules:
 
Me too, just rolled over 10,000 miles today.I'm very impressed with yamaha's quality.I did do the top end this fall at 8,616 miles just because.I found piston skirts and ring end gap out of spec, but it was still running fine.It didn't run bad before, but does run smoother with more power now, you should consider doing the top end on yours.Its not that uncommon to find a cracked skirt at high mileage, something to think about.
 
Phooey! I had major engine failure on my 97 SX700 at 6400 miles yesterday. Looks like crank bearing failure, but I won't know for sure until tomorrow.

Ironically, I bought the 700 this fall because of the great reputation of the Yamaha triples. It's been an expensive and frustrating season for me this year!

The '97 triples had this problem with one of the crank bearings, all of the 97's were like it. I think there was an update to be redone but I'm not 100% sure on that. I read on here to replace the bearing with one off a '98, when they fixed the problem.
 
mine was treated with this after break in . and i had to reclutch after i put it in as it ran 9000 .

I'm sorry you had problems,but don't forget you bought a 13 year old machine which you probably don't know all its history of care and maintenance.When they get older practically anything is possible.Once you get that thing redone and updated I'm confident it'll be a great older machine.
 
a note on mine due to set up it rarely revs over 7k. i put in a pipe spacer that gives it better low end power . so i rarely go over half throttle. i ran against a 03 rev 800 on the trail , i had no problem keeping up at half throttle . i asked the driver did you pin it ? yup . hu and he weighs 50lbs less . but i put in alot of time in setting this sled up as a trailsled

Do rings!!!,, it's time your over do,do they run good still? yep, but you have skirt wear and blow by a comp test does not tell the true story on rings

i would pull motor do crank/WP seals,check all bearings in drive line and skid

I considered doing crank seals, but I know of so many around here with mega miles and no problems with them I decided to take my chances, it seems to me that the top ends need the most attention from a preventative maintenance standpoint engine wise.The water pump was totally updated a while back and I go through the skid and driveline stuff periodically all along.

Thats where it'll get ya....seals are also a preventative maintenance thing believe it or not, if you want to remove any doubt at all concerning a burn down and down time,nobody likes to pay and do this stuff but hey ya know it's the nature of the beast on a 2 smoker and high mileage.
