They stop sealing...when that happens the effected cylinder sucks air through the seal and goes REALLY lean and burns the exhaust side off the piston.

-but what I was interested in is what actually happens to the seal. Seals would not work good up to a certain point and then wear out all at once and cause the engine to go really lean suddenly.

If a seal is leaking that bad, the sled will run very poorly and that would be noticed first.

How do you know the seal is leaking? How wide is the lip on them?

What I am saying is that it may be the engines are failing for some other reason. It is not normal for seals to cause problems at that mileage. There are many sleds with over 10,000 miles that have the original seals. Unless there has been a pressure test done, there is no way to know the seals are what caused the problem.
