Looking at a 99 Phazer for the wife?

Looking to pick up a beginner type sled for my wife. She has only ridden a few times but has shown more interest since we recently bought a camp in a snow belt. She is very petite. 4' 11" and is not really a toy buff like me. I have 2 young kids that are going to be getting a couple beginner sleds as well.

Knowing that she most likely will not jump into the sport full bore and want to ride all the time, I've decided to look for something small and affordable.

What are your thoughts on a 99 Phazer? I've found a decent deal on a low miles mint condition one. I don't know anything about this sled. Please chime in. Any other ideas of a sled that may better suit her?

When I was looking for my wife (5 feet, small hands), I found the throttle pull on the phazer's to be very high (I was really surprised actually), so much so that she ended up on a 600 redhead. All I'm saying is check out the throttle pull unless it will be short burst riding during and not all day events.

I picked up a 500 Vmax for my 12 and 14 year old to drive. My 12 yr old is 5 foot and has no problem with the sled. I put on plastics skis and shimmed them. The reason I went with the Vmax was because its liquid cooled. For those longer drives there is always heat in the foot wells.
 
Very reliable, mine has 12000kms or about 7000 miles maybe? Not sure with the miles-kms conversion, but I have had 0 problems with mine except for a couple bearings, which wear out on every sled. Installing a pipe made a world of difference to my sled. It pull harder, accelerates harder, more torque, faster, climbs higher, skis lift easier on drifts, drops, better on gas, stock reliability. Mine is the long tracked version of the phazer.
 
One of the best air cooled sleds ever made. The butterfly mikunis do have more throttle pull than newer models. They are really solid engines and very easy to work on.

However, the ride is nothing like the newer sleds. The steel shocks are okay and last a long time unless it is ridden hard. The ride is much better than a stock Viper, but nothing like the newer skids. Stock track isn't very good, and the 99 - 00 sleds came with steel skis which dart badly. If it is stock you will want to do some upgrades to it.

If you really want her to enjoy it, consider a Vector or even the newer Phazers in the FX chassis. I have seen a number of the newer Phazers sell for under $3600.
 
I have one...99..great sled..I ride it hard..its fun...VX301 skis make huge improvement..and looks
 
We dropped the top gear by two teeth on our 2001. Man it is snappy. Really fun to ride and keeps up on the trails. It gets passed on the lakes and roads of course, but not so bad that it doesn't keep up.
 
8 tooth drivers and a ripsaw with stock gearing (11% drop) makes this a real snappy little sled. It actually goes faster and gets better mpg than the stock setup on everything except the best of conditions. I am still trying to get my head around that one.

Find a 2001 Phazer Deluxe if you want these. I have seen them sell for $1800 - $2200. The track is better also on that model.
 
I think a rental sell off and a little elbow grease in a much better investment.

the trailing arm phazers are way overpriced IMO. get someone elses fan sled for much less money. or the pogo phazers are much cheaper and much lighter.

electric start and reverse will get her out more and make life much easier for you.

might as well get a 2 up.

There a great sled for trails,, moms got one with 9500 miles,,, slp skies-- (best upgrade) ,,, runs and handles great....
 
I have a 96 V-max XT 600 that my Ol' Lady ride's and you have to put on some plastic ski's....Steers easyier and dosen't dart!!!! But make sure the throttle isn't too much for he to pull that's the only complaint that mine has...Get eletric start or you will be pulling it every time....
