Exciter gear ratio ?'s

Need some input guys. Any advantage to changing from the stock 19 top 33 bottom (1.74) to a 17 top 29 bottom (1.71) My thoughts is that it should make it a little quicker as well as a little faster? fire away. Adam

ADAM, NOPE. YOUR NOT CHANGEING ANYTHING. ALL YOU DID WAS CHANGE GEARS THAT CAME UP WITH SAME RATIO. GO TO 17/33 1.94 ratio FOR MORE ACCLERATION. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
so, it would not make a difference that both gears are a smaller diameter, in that, they both spin faster? or am i over thinking it? sorry Tony, I typed the wrong ratios in in the first post, fixed them now.
 
adam I use the 17-29 gearing in my sled and it has a holeshot from hell and it also has good mid range right to the top and I dont change my gears from short tracks to long tracks.. I use a red poo secondary spring in the #1 hole tight and for the primary clutch well you just have to p.m. me for the rest of the recipe..since this combination has won many oval races and I am no longer running my exciter it is in retirement...#871R.A.D RACING :postwhore :2strokes:
 
871. i think i was the one that gave you your set up over on vs.com. just looking for a little extra all around, been getting a lot of 2onds this year and that needs to change next year. I think i am going to switch to a poo primary and secondary, and see where that gets me. I am coming up short in the middle and the end of the straights, comes out of the whole great, always first or tied for first to the first turn.
 
in my opinion putting smaller gears would actually loose horse power as it takes more ponies to make the tighter circle (scientific fact)... thats why guys but those big real wheels on thier skids
 
Well this is my thinking on this whole situation , if you gear for the highest mph with 8 tooth drivers and clutch to that set-up and you get good results from it I would think that it was a good set-up.. I know this system works on my champ sled and also other sleds and this was told to me by Mr. Dave Wahl... Also yes the bigger the Idler wheel on the suspension gives you more mph and less rotational restrictions.. Also my vintage 440 superstock fan sled won the championship in the MIRA circuit along with my champ sled I won semi-pro 600open championship with a 440 so I think I have a little knowledge about this setup!!! #871R.A.D RACING
 
The stock ratio's work great on my sled, which is 19/33, we run the same ratio on all the tracks, I got the clutching from you 8.1 chev, that made a world of differance, great holeshot. we have led the pack 1/4 lap at times, if we could just keep the motor together, would help. We mess with gear somewhat, but went back to stock. If you need some gears, let me know, I have a couple differant setups.
 
Owner's Manual Sprocket Selection for Oval

You guys probably already know this, but the owners manual for the 1977 440 STX recommends a 20T sprocket instead of the 19T sprocket for oval racing. I wish I could find my owner's manual....it will showup some day.
