Choosing a newer 2-stroke

Today I'm riding a SXR 700 with Bender pipes and Öhlins suspension. Tuned clutch and gearing. I feel like I want to try something else. To be honest I think it's a bit noisy, and I'd rather sell it than smother it.

The thing is I don't know which sled that'll be an improvement compared to my present.

What I want from my next sled is Rev (or similar) driving position, reliability, reverse gear, good suspension and deep snow qualities.

I know there are not many snowmobile engines with reliability comparable to the red top Yammy but there's got to be someone.

So, what should I look for?

A 600 REV or any 600 for that matter. I personally dont like 800 twins as they tend to rattle apart (cranks), and most engine failures seem to be 800 twins. The Rev Renegade 600 seems like a decent choice if you dont want to stay with Yamaha. I would say Doo is the most reliable after Yamaha. Only thing is that a stock 600 twin will probably have less HP than your triple piped SXR, but will be way better on fuel.
 
Do you know when the BRP 600's got the plate that prevent the PTO side crank sealing from popping out?
What about their greased crank bearings, do they still work with milage on them?

The hp is actually not an issue, as long as it's above 100.

My buddy has nearly 12k on his two year old 600 Rev. He did grease the crank bearings over the summer. Not sure about the crank seal plate.

Miles or km?

How many miles does his drive belts last?
 
not sure on the crank bearings, but on the 03-04 600 REVs had the piston rings that flaked, and it was not a recall so you may want to do the rings if you get those year.

Ok. I'm actually not considering a 03-04. The BRP sled that seems most interesting to me is the 07 Lynx RC 600 SDI or 08 Lynx RE 600 with RER.

What about Arctic Cat and Polaris? Don't they have any sleds that compete with BRP?

oh, I didn't realize you are in Sweden. Yes they have sleds that compete with BRP, like the f-series, crossfires, M's, etc and polaris has the IQ's like the dragon, shift, switchback, RMK, etc. How old are you looking to go with a sled?
 
Listen to the stuff said about crank bearings on the doos. The 800 cranks have 3 sealed bearings. They have to be re-greased at about 5000km or so. That`s what I ve heard.
Right now I`m rebuilding a friends 2006 Doo Summit 800 H.O Powertek.

The PTO side bearings failed and squeezed the crank seal. The larger bearing on the mag side had the seal halfway out so.. it was about to fail.

Its a freakin stupid system if you ask me!

I'm thinking 05 and later. Been thinking about the Firecat. 03-04 seemed to have weak chassis. I'm not sure about the Diamond Drive though, anyone with experience of it?

To be honest, I don't know much about Polaris. Fusion seemed to have a weak clutch, right? Haven't heard of any issues with their engines, but I haven't been digging too deep into it either.

kimoaj, I agree, it's stupid. Couldn't they just have kept it simple? Oil has successfully been lubricating crank bearings since..well a very long time ago...
Wasn't the greased bearings meant to reduce oil consumption and exhaust emissions? Anyway I don't get it...
 
polaris IQ 600ho motor is pretty bullet proof. IQ, IQ Dragon, Switchback, RMK
if i didn't ride yamaha thats the sled i would have, probably switchback

That's my understanding. If they'd have made them serviceable without having to split the case I think it'd be better than relying on oil vapor. Especially at high miles.

My buddy has been real happy with his. Well, except for the fact that I finally have a faster sled than his.

i would if i was you, sounds like that motor would be a good fit for what you want. plus it is the strongest of the 600 motors
