99 vmax 700. the recoil pull doesnt fully retract back in all the way. is there a way to fix this? or do i need a new recoil assy?? thanks

It is pretty easy to replace the rope, what i did was remove the recoil from the sled. Then pull the rope all the way out and hold it in that position, i used some compession clamps to hold it there. Once you have it locked in the fully pulled position remove the nut and the underlying cog assembly, pay close attention how the cog is positioned and return spring so you can re-install in the correct position. Now you should see how the rope is attached to the pulley, i just cut the rope and pulled the knot end out and now you can install the new cord through the outer housing and through the pulley and tie the knot to keep it attached to the pulley. Repinstall the small spring, cog, cover and nut. Now you can take the clamps off and the pulley will pull the new cord back into the recoil. Re-install the recoil on the motor and your problem should be resolved.
I just rebuilt one from a 2001 that wouldn't recoil most of the time, what i discovered was the rope itself had sections that increased in diameter, basically some sections had bunched up to the point that it couldn't fit all the rope around the pulley.JeepJimmy said:

just another suggestion... use locktite on the nut as I had one vibrate off and make a mess... tj

Mine broke this past winter when we were off on a zero dark 30 ride. Had to break out the NEVER used EMERGENCY START ROPE from the tool pouch. It took 4 guys approxemently 2 decades to figure out how the damn thing hooks up.......and 2 seconds to start it.

boats.net has the spring for 13bux and the rope for 9 bux. i dont think im going to argue with that.

so... how does it hook up?... I've looked at the Emergency Starter Rope a thousand times and can't see where that plastic thing is meant to fit on the clutch... (give me some binder twine or hay wire and I can start the sled however)....tj

ok, i messed with it today. the spring was broken. OMG what a pain............. i had it together and it popped out. spent two hours to try to get it back and no luck! gave up for now. any ideas?
