as the season dwindles down I'm looking forward to my first summer project which is building a srx 700 engine from the ground up.

first item on my wish list is a crankshaft, best price I found on a oem crank was $1200.00 wow..so much for a budget.

my original plan was to go with only new oem parts but it probably wouldnt take much to talk me into a re-built crank...please...anybody.

I've read here that some people switch to viper cranks however I was'nt really clear on why, is it just for the weight or is there a performance advantage aswell.


any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
 
Start with a good used or rebuilt crankshaft and check replace bearings, get it indexed, straitened, rewelded and you'll be good to go. Even new cranks are not always strait + indexed properly.

thing is, I'm selling the motor I have to offset the cost of my little summer project hehe..so no crank to re-build.

I guess I could just buy a re-built without trading-in my old, gonna call mon.

I always woundered how they re-build a welded crank..hmm

yes but no outside bearings and I dont have a trade in so add another $200.00

so I'm looking at $1200.00 new or $950.00+tx on a re-built.

the only reason I'm looking at the $950.00 for a re-built is because like sideshow mentioned you can easily get a brand new one out of whack, I'm assuming a re-built is verified with more scrutiny.

The place you mention does give a 90 day guaranty and they seem like they know there sheit, plus they're like an hour from me.

When you are getting that close to the price of a new one you may want to go new. Over the years I have never got a new crank from Yamaha that is not indexed properly, but I have seen an SX crank that was at Max runout tolerance but still definately useable...Yamaha parts are usually darn good.
In your situation, if you can't pick up a good used crank for a lot less, I would go new, now that I see the price difference.

i agree with sideshowbob.for the amount you will save a new one would be a good choice.the price has really increased on these cranks,i bought a new one when i built my 780 3 years ago and got it to my door for 900 from teamalpine and now they are listing them at 1093.00. if you do go the rebuilt route i would look else ware for a rebuilder ,if i could type faster i could write pages of horror stories of cv-tech's rebuilt srx cranks,clyinder plating and customer service .i wouldn't let them work on my wheel barrow let alown my engine parts.
 
funny us guys around here have used them for years with out problem's lol my buddies srx has had one of there rebuilds cranks in there now for 10,000 km he has 20,000 km on he machine now wow 1 re-build lol
 
what year crank are you looking for 98-99 or 00-02? i have both here and i would sell you either one for less than half of new cost, let me know thanks
 
Why not keep your engine and just rebuild it? You would be way farther ahead money wise going that way even if you did it all with oem parts. Just send the crank out and have it gone through. have the cylinders replated if they need it and replace the oil and water pumps and install new pistons and rings. If you are wanting the most money for your used engine you would have to part it out and sell it anyway so just rebuild it and put it back together and save all the time and extra money replacing what you already have.

you make an excellent point, but the motor was re-built at the beginning of the season, not by choice, ran great all winter so why tear down a fresh engine, why not let someone else enjoy it, I'm looking to build a brand new engine ground up cuz I luv my srx and its probably going to be the last two stroke I ever buy.


what year crank are you looking for 98-99 or 00-02? i have both here and i would sell you either one for less than half of new cost, let me know thanks
