sxr 600 over heating

i have a friend (sxr600) who has not yet discovered the interent and has been over heating like crazy. he has attempeted many times to blead the system. when he bought the sled the guy told him that it had an overheating problem and it needed headgaskets. so he went ahead and replaced them and still the problem was there. so he took the heads to get milled thinkin they were warped and there were no cracks and no warpage. and yet still the same problem. any advice for him?

I'd check the water pump as some of these leak and have impeller and or shaft problems too.Theres no doubt the pump could cause some serious overheating if its not pumping correctly.
 
simplistic as it may sound, after you check the waterpump, check the cap. is the coolant leaking back into the overflow bottle? you can always have the whole system pressure checked to find any leakage.
 
trail conditions, when riding throw some snow up on running boards to make sure the tunnel/foot coolers are cooling as well, i have seen it many times when the rear cooler getting the only snow spray just won't cool enough to keep temperatures down alone , especially when running hard.... ;)!
 
first of all..is the pump turning..maybe the blades shot and not circulating .If it is that he rides in marginal snow conditions,,try ice scratchers.I have run m6 600SXR in warm conditions and always pin it hard.I never ever have heating issues with it and have almost 13,000 km's on original set up.Make sure your antifreeze is mixed properly..I go 60/00 mix.
 
I have a 700 SXR and the bolt holding the impeller on the shaft of the water pump backed out and I had overheating issues. Pull the cover and look for wear on the inside of the cover and the outer blades of the pump.
 
i have posted this before , when you cant explain the overheating issue ,impeller head gasket , base gasket etc.... go to the crankshaft , the brass gear that drives the impeller is spun , it is pressed between two sealed bearings , .....the brass will heat up faster then the rest of the crank and act like its working properly @ start up and first 10/15 minutes of riding , untill the crank reaches same temp then the gear will start to spin ..... it is near impossible to tell buy eye , even with the crank on the bench , but i guarantee you that's what it is ....

you dont need ice scratcher,s and all that other stuff , fix the problem

sxr overheating

Hello i have a 2000 600 sxr with an overheating problem and after reading this thread i decided that after trying everything else i tore the engine back down and discovered that the brass gear on the crank is indeed the problem after heating it with a torch lightly the gear becomes free so i called the dealer today and they say that i cannot buy this gear so what now? just wondering if anyone has bought one aftermarket or what the cure is thanks..
 
the brass gear on the crank??? Gear on the crank should be solid I would think.As the crank spins it turns the gear and shaft of the water pump...enlighten us more..

My dealer's web site shows one in stock. Check with www.portyamaha.com They are really good to deal with. You'll have to have a machine shop install it.
 
I think harness has this one nailed down, the brass gear on the crank (pn 8CH-11434-00-00), it meshes with the gear on the water pump/oil pump shaft. The brass gear can loosen up over time and spin on the crank, or in other words the brass gear stays "stationary" while the crank is spinning (engine running). With the brass gear stationary, the water pump and oil pump don't turn.
 
sxr overheating

Well i swapped out the crank for another one and had it out today for the first time and it works perfect now running without a hitch.Thanks everyone for the help..
