Cracked exhaust manifold

I was wondering why my viper was getting all greasy under the hood this past year. As I was cleaning the power valves the other day I noticed what looked to be hairline cracks in the exhaust manifold where the three ports become one. Upon removal I found the cracks were on the bottom also so there are a total of 4 cracks large enough to allow exhaust to escape.

Question: Is this something common with the vipers? If not then maybe I should be looking for a cause of the cracks? I am thinking that I will just run a bead of weld down the cracks and that should suffice. Does anyone have experience with this? thanks
 
Yes, they are prone to crack at those points,,, just replaced mine on an 02 model....
 
Wire brush the crap out of 'em and weld 'em. Mine cracked at around 5500 and are still good at 13,000 . Pretty common thing.
 
If for some reason you decide not to weld it. I have a brand new manifold never used zero miles. I piped my Viper before ever running it on the snow. Make offer if interested also have the stock muffler.
 
Yup, definitely a common issue on the Vipers, both of ours on our 2 05 Viper Mtn's cracked before 3000miles.
 
This is common, and can be caused by excessive transfer of vibration to the y pipe because the exhaust donut/gasket needs to be replaced. I would take a good look at the ypipe-exhaust joint and inspect the gasket carefully. The other possible cause is excess motor movement from the lack of torque stop/limiter on the engine itself. Yamaha didn't provide a torque stop from the factory and this can cause excessive engine movement. and to answer your question, yes it can be welded although its tough to weld because its very thin, but will continue to crack untill you fix the reason it cracked in the first place.

Maybe this is an excellent time to get triple pipes, so don't need the manifold anymore ;-)

We went this route on the one Viper...Speedwerx triples :)
