Has anyone tired the new Simmons Gen II skis? I'm finally getting around to purchasing after market boots for the Viper and haven't heard many stories about the Gen II's. I'm wondering if they have managed to pull off the wide ski thing without the obvious shortfalls for trail and hard pack.

From previous threads it looks like a choice between:

Kimpex Arrow's
C&A's
Simmons Gen I or Gen II

but there isn't much said about the Gen II's. I can't believe a company like Simmons would tout this as their next generation boot without having done their homework.
 
I can't say much about the Simmons skis, but I will say that the Arrow skis are awesome. Deffinantly the most under rated AM skis out there today.
 
on trail the gen I and gen II skis will handle the same. Viper dosen't need the gen II width to stay on top of the snow in Ont or the midwest area as the snow has enough moisture content for the most part. Yamaha Mtn skis also do well on the 2 stroke sleds. Biggest downfall to the gen II skis is that there is sometimes not enough snow to make them work their best especially on the 4 stroke sleds. Out west is a different story.
 
Gen II's were designed for the 4 stroke sleds, I've read quite a bit about them since I purchased my Apex Mtn last year. Most guys always say to keep the stock Yamaha skis for the spring snow because the Gen II's will suck in it.

We also have been running the Yamaha Mtn skis that came stock on our 05 Viper Mtns and we absolutely love them, you might want to look around for a set of those.
 
sly dog has a very good ski @ 7 inch wide the back of the ski turns up which most other skis i,ve noticed don,t which makes them very good for backing up as they don,t dig in like others do , the more agressive u are the better the ski works and they are cheaper than the rest and very tough. i have folded the ski back 2 the spindle on my nytro pulling me from being stuck, one of those slinggeys u hook 2 another sled and let it ripp easier than sholveling ur self out. sly dog is a very good lookin ski also with many different colors. AL
 
sxlover, the genII skis seem ok for me in spring snow conditions, but I agree the stockers may work better.

I love my gen 1 simmons for pretty much all midwest type riding from trails to deep lake affect powder on my 136" sx-r 700.
 
Thanks guys. I haven't heard much about Yamaha stock mountain skis. How are they on trails?

I am not sure that I completely understand the drawbacks of the Gen II's yet though. The larger width means better floatation on powder but does it also mean poor behaviour when the snow is wet? More drag perhaps?
 
On a Yammie 2 stroke, the gen I skis are slightly better than the Yamaha mtn skis on trail, and the Mtn skis are slightly better off trail. Gen II skis need more weight up front to work their best in your snow conditions (high moisture content compared to mtn snow) The gen II skis will increase your ski stance 4" off trail, and will require more steering effort and more snow to work effectively. Sx,srx, viper will do well with the yamaha mtn skis or gen I. Rx, apex, nytro do decent with yamaha mtn skis or slydog all around use, and gen II skis excell on the rx and apex off trail when there is decent snow. Spring snow conditions hurt the gen II skis, as flotation is not needed in favor of a narrow ski stance. I am basing all this on using all sled/ski combos in the Dub, Hp, Mani Ont areas. West of the Mississippi is a different ball game except for the spring snow conditions.
 
my brother has a set of yamy moutain skis on his viper. i trail/offtrail rode it in muni in january with these skis on it for 2 days. handes very well on trail and the nose stays on top of the snow when offtrail. i was not pushing it hard as i was going in for acl surgery in feb but we where both pleased with how it handled.
