Ok...So I've searched the forums and have found out that there is a lot pf problems with the grip warmers on the Vipers.

I have an '02 Viper with occasional warmer issues. Decided to replace them with Hot Grips. They showed up yesterday and have a resistor and a switch with them and a phone number to call in case you have an issue. No answer!

So here's the questions:

1 - Can I install these using my existing variable temp control switch and will it work ? (I would like to)

2 - If some one tells me to wire these parallel or series, what is the current stock set-up? What needs to be changed? (please be specific, thanks)

3 - Do I need to include the resistor that came with the new grips? Is there one already there from the factory?

Thanks in advance for the help, and would like to hear from anyone who has had sucess or failure with this install.

The problem with your grip is not likely the grip itself but the swithes or resistor so I would rewire

I will test the switches when I can, but i have already read the forums and it looked to me that the problem was in the grips...They have already been purchaced, so that doesn't matter.

Anybody else? Specifics please.

Thanks,
Dave

well... the first thing that comes to mind is have you ohm checked the stock grips and then one of the hotgrips? the stock viper grips get the feed from the cdi box,I would guess that its gonna be a differnt type resistance(differnt amount of wire in each grip) and you may smoke the cdi box circuit if you run the hotgrips on the cdi box feed. You may have to tie into the blue headlight feed wire and wire in the resistor for the hotgrips from there.

alot of times its one of the stock yamaha grips that cause the problem, you can find out which one easily by hooking only 1 up at a time and see which one works good and not so good. Usually replacing the bad one cures the problem because they are wired in series.

from memory the problem is that the ouput voltage is cut in half below 5-6000rpm ish. I had wired min up on a switch so I could pull off the headlight power when I wanted to and switch back to stock for adjustment. Rock makes a system like this for the four strokes that is automatic. Not sure if he has a two stroke version or not.

Thanks Guys...I have also emailed Hot Grips to see what they say. It looks like the new grips are at around 3 ohms. Going to see how the old ones ohm out. I can't believe that no one has replaced their grips with Genuine Yamaha Hot Grips.

Had a 96 v max 600 grip quit working they where 3 ohm also I had to replace the resitor or diode I forget now but it fixed the prob

I wanted to bring this back to the top and add my latest findings:

The factory dial will not heat the handwarmers from the CDI box.

You can use the original ground, but need to tap power from the blue (and white I think) headlight feed as mrviper700 said above!

I did install the Hi and Low switch with the resistor inline for the low setting

I checked the voltage at the connections between the hand grips with the sled running and it was only 6. Not sure why, checked the heated shield plug and still had 13+ there, and they are tied together.

Either way, the warmers get good and hot only after a couple of minutes, so they work now.

Another thing, if you do this, leave the factory switch hooked up or the warning light will blink!

i did last week. but on SRX, not viper. i didnt use that ceramic resistor. each grip has 2 wires, (not polarity sensitive). take a wire from each grip and solder together, and with the remaining wires connect to the 2 wires your old grips were hooked to. the variable temp switch will regulate the heat. :letitsnow

Kuips, it worked only because the 98-99 srx use a differnt system for the grips/thumbwarmer. the newer 2000-02 srx and viper come from the cdi box and will not work as axapowell found out..

Do I just meter out the ohms at the plugs under the handle bar pad? My bar heaters bothe quit on my 02 viper, but my thumb heater still works. How much does Yamaha charge for stock warmers? Can they be bought individually or only as a pair?
Thanks, Rob
