What did this motor come out of?

I need some help. I would like to ID this motor and what sled it would have been in originally. Where can I look on it for a serial number or any ID? Here are a couple pics I took with my cell phone. It's currently in an old 340 Cheetah I found for parts. I'm told that it should still run. It's been sitting for about 6 or 7 years, I opened the gas tank and it still smells fresh. OK I've resized and added the pics.

looks like an old gs338 motor from the engine ductwork. recoil side and clutch look funny though.

The clutch is a hex clutch from an arctic cat. The recoil has a steel cable for a rope, did they have that or is that something someone rigged up?

i think that it might be a rigging on the starter as the gs we had had a different style recoil.

Try to get the serial # off the motor. Im not 100% but your dealer might be able to track that # down for you to what year, model of sled. If you have to, convince them you are buying parts to rebuild this motor

My brother says it's from a 643... does that sound right or possible? It runs, I started it today with the e-start. Needs a carb cleaning, which I'll do. I'm pulling the parts off the cheetah that will work for my 440 cheetah, but I'm going to pull the motor and bring it to Hay Days. Oh and it's damn loud with just straight pipes... Also any clue where the serial number would be on the motor?

I haven't went to a dealer yet but by comparing the Micro Fiche, if it's a 643 it's from '73 EW 643. The only one I could find that had only a single carb. The fluid drive looks interesting... Thanks for the help.

there are lots of single carbed engines from the 70's in fact they had issues with the synching of duals and opted for singles i have 3 338's and 1 433 all single carbed.

Thanks guys. The vintagesleds site had some cool info. I'm thinking of bringin it to Hay Days, if it doesn't sell, it might make great go-cart motor if nothing else, maybe I might run across an old 643 in need of a motor...
