i have an old vmax that sputters and back fires, i have emptied all fuel out and put fresh fuel. still back fires. does anyone have an idea of where or what it could be. in the process of rebuilding the carbs.

Have you checked for mice in the exhaust.

i didn't check for mice, usually in my area not a problem, compression is good, just redid top end last season. will check again though.

Clean the carbs. Plugged pilots cause a lean condition and will cause backfiring.

plugged piolts dont make lean condition it means no fuel at all , if its back firing that may be a ignition problem, stator
try re-grounding the coil to the motor. reeds might be toast as well.

cleaned carbs,no mice. will try tomorrow. thanks for all the advice, hopefully it will work if not stator is next.
