Eagle River Wisconsin

If you like to hunt/fish/camp/snowmobile/hike/motorcycle/boat/ATV and you like a nicely wooded landscape then Eagle River is the place for you.
 
Very nice area. My parents retired about 30 miles from there in Minocqua. It might be strange living in a vacation area; to me, the area means riding, lakes, tarverns, etc, but not work. Be sure to consider that weekends and summers will be very busy and despite all the lakes, lakefront is expensive (lots of Chicago money up there.)

I would love to do it; I just wanted to remind you of a few realities.

Thanks for the info, no problem here with living and working in a "vacation area" that just means midweek riding for me.

How does the Eagle River area do for snow, they are probably too far from Lake Superior to get much if any Lake Effect Snow?

I just spent the weekend there for the vintage races.
I love the area big time!
Made reservations for Jan. to attend the derby and do some riding.

Sounds like living closer to the Michigan border would be the hot ticket for more consistent snow conditions.
 
For sure you'll see that in the michigan snowbelt as well where certain parts of a county will get slammed and the other corner will be practically dry!
 
They get a lot of sled traffic in town, and the trails turn to "snirt" often, but if you can stay away from that you have access to the best riding, no matter what type you want to do. You are in the heart of the northwoods and less than an hour from the U.P. If my wife would go, I'd have moved there years ago.
 
Eagle river is the edge of the snow belt. If you live a little farther north you would be more into the snow but Eagle river does pretty good.
I would love to be in a position to move and live in that area! I am jealous for sure and wondering ....... if you don't take the job, maybe I will! lol.... what kind of job is it anyway?
 
I have a friend that owns a cabin up there, and every time he goes im very juelous because compared to riding down south it is way better up there. He never has a complaint about not enough snow.
 
I've been going to Eagle River since I could drive a car up there. I have a friend that has a big house half way between ER and St. Germain... Beautiful country up in the northwoods of Wisconsin.. It USED TO SNOW like CRAZY from the LAKE EFFECT snow,, but,, the trees have gotten bigger??? and something is going on with the snow lately,, that it doesn't get LE like it used to get... Some LE but Mostly just from snowstorms passing through... I've been looking for property for a couple of years now up there and the prices are GOING UP just within the last few months.. I got my eye on a real log home in Phelps.. but,, the money isn't right JUST YET... The guy is getting older and I think he's moving to FLORIDA or something like that... I'm going there in a few weeks MAYBE to sit down and try and STEAL it from him,, but,, VACATION PROPERTY up there is STILL AT A PREMIUM... As far as the trails are concerned,,, EVERYONE goes up there for the DERBY and ABSOLUTELY KILLS the trails.. From Rhinelander to Land O' and even up to the casino in Watersmeet,, the trails are BEATEN UP to say the least... It's NOT the BEST LOCATION to start from if you want to ride around the trail system.. It's WAY BETTER in BRUCE CROSSING in the U.P. ( about an hour NORTH of EAGLE RIVER),, but,, like it was said,,, there isn't too much work up there.. ESPECIALLY AROUND THE U.P... It's BEAUTIFUL,, but unless you're a copper miner,, there isn't much work..I think the copper mines even closed up..!!! The WIFE and I are SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING buying a "shack" up there ( we've been looking for over a year already) and pulling the PLUG eventually and making the area our NEW STOMPING GROUND for our retirement... That's how "nice" it is up there...
 
although the trail system through THREE LAKES to RHINELANDER ( a couple of ways to get there) is NOT TOO BEAT UP,, or at least NOT AS BAD when there are a lot of traffic up there.. I suppose people don't want to ride to Rhinelander because it's a BIG CITY as much as they want to ride NORTH to WATERSMEET... Thr trails from Three Lakes to,, lets say Monico/ Pelican Lake aren't beaten up too bad either... Usually a good ride from Three lakes to Pelican lake to Rhinelander ( Billy and Johny's ) makes for a day's trip... You start heading towards EAGLE RIVER,, you get SNIRT....
 
Theres a trail that goes through Phelps and up north to land O' that,, if I remember correctly,,, was really twisty turny thru Phelps,, but did some Powerline riding on the way to land O' and it was relatively ALLRIGHT considering the traffic.. There is a strip joint in the woods called Frontier,,, north of ER on the way to Phelps.. Thats the trail you need to get on.. Somewheres north of the BP on 45 ( wild Eagle Lodge BP) I don't know any trail numbers cause I don't pay attention to that UNLESS I GET LOST,,,,but,,, about 1/2 mile NORTH of the BP gas station you cross 45 and take THAT TRAIL SYSTEM... Most people stay on the WEST SIDE of 45 and take the trails through the SWAMPS to get to the railroad grade.. Although those trails are MUCH FASTER to Land O',, they're MOST ALWAYS WAY MORE beaten than the Phelps/ East side trails... ESPECIALLY DERBY WEEKEND.....
