Scotty got his sled over to my place today.We will go over it.It has 5220 km's on it and is really in clean shape.Things look like new on it.Original track in fantastic shape as the skid to..nice shape.This sled was not abused.I opened up the hood and couldn't believe how clean things looked.He picked up one nice XTC700 for himself.

Change main jets to 142.5 & drop needles 1/2. This really wakes em up & good to -35.

I wander what speeds he'll be getting with that track..he must be geared down to begin with.....We have to check what the clutches have in them also.Won't know how she will perform until he can take it out in the snow..

if I located the right model...stock jetting is 1-145,2&3-143.8.
Clip at #3 position. Shift rpm is 8300 rpm. Weights are 8ch with 13.9 rivets both holes. primary should be g-p-g and green secondary at 60 wrap. It has a 45 helix and gearing should be 22/40 on her.

apparently the seller got it off an older gentleman,so probably took it easy with it.You wouldn't believe how clean looking it is for 12 years old...was a great find for my stepson..power to him.He is so anxious....he can't wait to ride his new toy...

one thing I noticed,the FRA is set to last position,so maybe a heavier rider was riding this sled.I can hardly compress the skid by pushing down the rear bumper.On my 2 sleds my suspension is soft,positioned in the front position.

yeah,I haven't ever touched needles.To afraid to try it and screw up something.Some things I won't touch..but opening up a motor is a breeze..loll

Well on my bike the needle is in the center of the slide going into the mainjet as you give throttle it moves up , the needle is tapered so when you raise it or lower it you are changing the amount of fuel that can get by.

So if needles are droped 1/2 ( or .5 ) a position.... they wouldn't allow so much fuel through ????

It will be leaner in the mid-range. That is where the needles control flow.
The picture isn't great but that doesn't look like the stock track to me.....

the pic is perfect man..It is a 1.5 track.With 5000 plus km's on the sled this track probably replaced the stock one because there is no wear on it yet and it is clean,but 1.5 was standard for that sled.
Well, I'll sit corrected. After doing a little fiche/part number research, I'm stunned that I didn't know about Yamaha using anything other than the Yoko (aside from the mountains).
Anybody know how many other 'special' models came from the factory with a cool Free Ride track??? Maybe I've been living under a rock...

the needle refers to well the needle that tapers down in the center of the carb it goes into the main jet. If you look at the needle there is an E clip on it, there are several notches on the needle for the clip. if you raise the clip the needle is lowered down. This will slightly lean out the motor in the mid range which will improve fuel mileage at trail speeds and make many sleds snappier coming out of corners when operating between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle. Above approx 3/4 throttle the main jet will have more effect then the needle position. Be forwarned it is possible to burn the motor down in the midrange if you have set the mains low and moved the needles too much. Turk or others can add or amend but that's how i understand it.

Corrrection: The needle does not go into the main jet it goes down into the tube above the main jet that brings fuel up through the center of the carb. for many models you can actually buy different needles. On the older round slide carbs this is much easier then the flat slide carbs, should be info in the tech pages as to how to do this.
