Front Ohlins shocks with out reservoir

I have an opertunity to buy a pair of front Ohlins shocks for my Viper
however they dont have the Reservoir. How much of a diference does it make to have the reservoir?
 
i have never seen a set without the reservoir. the resevoir allows for more oil so it stays cool longer thus preventing shock fade.
 
thats what i said, but the guy selling them said ohlins made both, theyre coming from Carver

so in your opinion how would they compare?
 
They will deff fit your viper. Are they the ya 640d from carver on close out? They are nice shocks. The resivor with the clickers are for compression damping. Did you compair the price to just sending yours in and have them rebuilt and valved with new springs? They will ride like new. Carver is nice to work with, im dealing with them now. Pioneer is also a great place. Heres some links to do some research on these shocks and the terminology from ohlin. CCC

Yes the shocks are the YA640, new for $440 ,Decent price?
well if I go with my old shocks it will be at least $100 for new springs + shock rebuild. But if the ohlins would be that much of an inprovment over the rebuilt stock shocks i was thinking of upgradeing. any thoughts?
 
I guess it doesnt make too much of a difference since I cant even find a pair oh shocks with the reservoirs for sale. Even on the Ohlins home page, how long ago did ohlins stop making shocks for the VIPER?

I got my rear skid ohlins from the classifieds here, you just have to keep your eye out. Ebay will have a set roll through every once in a while. A used set usually around $300 to $400 sounds about right. The ones at carver are nice and a big upgrade for the money but have limited adjustments. What style do you ride? Call mike at carver and see if he will valve them to your weight and style for that price as that is the key. If you buy used most likely you will have to send them in for a rebuild and valve to your weight for them to work right anyway. I have found that ohlins aint cheep by any means. Post in the wanted adds, might catch someone with a set. PM viperking, he might have a set laying around. CCC
 
Another big thing about shocks with resis over shocks without..


shocks wihout resis end up mixing the oil and nitrogen together creating a stiffer shock overtime while riding...

The resis have a piston preventing the nitrogen from mixing with the oil which provides smoother suspension...

Got this info from a shock rebuilder in the states. hes actually in the works of trying to make a piston in the pogo's to prevent both compounds from mixing.
 
Finally Decided what shocks to buy

Well I came to a decision and I bought the Ohlins with out the piggy back
reservoir. I am more then pleases with these shocks and I havent even ridden my sled yet.
I want to give a shout out and thanx to Carver Performance for their good customer sevice, resonable pricing, & prompt delivery.

I Got Mine From Them W Res For My Venture . They Were Hard To Find . I Had Works Shocks Wo Res . But They Could Not Hold Up To What The Rear Air Wave Suspension Could Dish Out
 
I ran them on my srx, then on my viper for 5years and they still drop tested the same, never rebuilt and never could make them fade. If the weight is on your sled, it sets a little high. I used my stock prings on my shocks the last couple years. The stock springs just didn't have enough setin. Sled rode better with stock springs.
The part number I used was for a venture/vmax/sx which is why they didn't have cans. Canned shocks dont fit on these sleds without cutting the bellypan when used in the stock mount. They did make long travel canned ohlins for them for snowcross but they used the srx/sx mount locations with different ends. Pricy.
I used the viper version with cans on my venture and they worked good, they just didn't give the ride the non canned vers did.

run no preload on those springs works better and a venture sway bar really makes that thing corner.
if you use the stock springs on the ohlins, you will need to make a spacer to be able to make the nuts touch the spring, then run no or little preload. Make sure and line up the front of that sled again as any height change will screw up the toe alot.

Absolutely! Mike Carver is great. I'd recommend his shop to anybody....


Incidentally, I've been out to his shop in St. Hilaire, MN. It's pretty cool and there is tons on Yamaha memorobilia there. He ran a Yamaha dealership there for a long time. Also, until 2 years ago, Robby Malinowski's race team operated out of Carver's shop/ garage there. Mike Carver was the man that kept those race sleds together.....
 
I said it befrore and I will say it again...Kimpex Arrow skis for these old pro-action yammies. The dual runners make a world of difference, they are a hell of alot lighter than stock and they look sweet. Plus, the price is right. I'm tell you guys, there is no down side to these skis on our Yammies.

I know BETHEVIPER recomends them also. I am also in the market for new skis and have been leaning twoards the arrow's or the SLP/SLT's. I would go red ski's with black loops for the ER, on my S i would go with black ski's and red loops. CCC

Go for it man. You won't regret dropping some money on the Arrow skis.
