just picked up an old yamaha for myself pretty cheap. It is at a friends house right now but I have a couple questions. It has spark and has compression (110 psi) on both cylinders and we were just trying some starting fluid but it just didn't want to start. It was close though. I still need to go through and clean the carb . But is their anything else to look at. Also how can I tell the year on this sled.

I'm just trying to sort out a no spark problem on the same sled. I have 98 ohms between the brown and blue which I believe is the charge coil. I just don't know if this the right resistance for that coil. Would you happen to know or be able to check yours for me?
 
I think you'll get yours going. I wouldn't recommend starter fluid for a 2 stroke, but try some gas down the cylinders and see if it runs for a bit. Carbs get gummed up pretty bad when they sit. I usually need to take them apart a few times to get them properly cleaned out. I seem to always miss something.

I don't have a brown or blue wire on the coils. Only a orange and a white. Also mine is a 73 as I find out. Let me know if you would like me to check anything else out.

This wouldn't be on the external coils. There is wiring coming off the stator itself and the blue and brown are off separate 2 pin connectors coming from the stator. Not sure if 73 is the same though.
 
I was just thinking, if yours was built in 73, could that mean it's for the 74 model year? Essentially making it a 74? Did you get it running yet?

they shut off by joining the points together rather than
shorting to ground. and found you need to put a paper slice in one set of points while working with the other set
to get a nice open , shut reading on meter.
