OK so my stock grips ripped oopen the end and was shorting out so i bought some new polly heater grips. The way they want me to wire it is to the switch provided which is a high/low switch. Stock i have variable adjustable knob. Can i still wire the grips into the variable knob or do i have to put the high/low switch in?
Thanks, Matt
Thanks, Matt
if your new grips have 2 wires each, simply splice them into the existing wires. i like to splice beteewn the grips and the bullet connectors, leaving the bullet connectors on the main harness and sacrificing the grip wire leads, connecting the other half of the bullets to the new grip wires. hope that made sense! solder, silicone, and shrink tube are the way to go.

Will they work the same if they are a different wattage than the originals?
I was under the impression that the switch has to be matched to the grips watt draw.

i am no expert on the subject, but based on my experience changing grips on the pre high output ignitions, the yamaha/hotgrips have been a direct change out. the resistor and switch supplied with the hot grips are not needed as the factory system compensates for them. i have about half a dozen switches and resistors from the original kits unused and have never had an issue.

looking at 88T-BK-KIT or 8ED-BK-KIT
feel free to post a link of ones that you have purchased and that work well with the stock variable temp switch. thanks!!

either of those will work. pay attention to the difference in length. the 8ED's were for the longer bars. look at your grips now. notice the spacer between the grip and either the thottle perch or the brake res. some sleds had narrow spacers and some had wider to compensate. worst case, depending on your sleds bars would be to have to remove the spacer and drill a new hole for the rivet. the ones for the higher output ignitions had the softer rubber and were longer, like the 8DN listed. although if i read it right, i was under the impression they needed more voltage, maybe not. those ones in the link have the same part #'s as yamaha's accessory catalog.

thanks for the input, i think i will order the longer ones, if i have to, i will drill new holes for the rivets, and push the throttle and brake brackets closer to the center of sled..
thats what i have done. now after reading that info and the fact i have the room for them, i am shooting for the longer, softer 8dn ones for my next set.
