I know I asked similer questions awhile back, but im not sure if this one was answered. anyways, 2000 sx700r, previous owner had 144 studs added last winter, 96 in v pattern in middle and 48 on the outside of track on every other section(whatever thats called) I went ahead and removed the 48 outside studs last weekend, came off very easy, holes look ok, I now have a decision to make on the other 96, i dont like how some of the studs are right even and level with the slider windows.. .there is probably 8-10 studs total at the widest parts of the V that touch the slider window, that concerns me alittle, and i have also been told lately that running only 96 studs in a 700 sled could be understudded and might actually cause a stud to come loose being understudded, If I were to remove all 96 studs, and therefor have 144 holes in my track, would that degrade the track quality? for a 10 yo track, it still looks in great shape, I cant afford to be replacing a track this winter, so im trying to do the best i can with it... as far as having studs, that really doesnt matter either way to me, I have been riding the last 3 years, and never had a studded sled, and cant recall when i would have needed one, I do like to go down a groomed trail, and slide the back of the sled around(friends hate this)haha.... anyways, am i just better off leaving those few studs next to that slider window? is it true 96 studs is under studded for a 700, and will removing all 144 studs and having 144 holes in the track do anything bad to the track? im sorry so long..thanks again

My opinion

I have run several tracks with the studs removed and have never had any problems at all. I've got a ton of holes in the track on my viper right now. Ever seen a mountain track that someone "ported" with 1: holes all throught it? Those little stud holes are fine. It is true that 96 studs is not enough for a 700. If you ride in pristine conditions all the time then using it with 96 studs will be fine. If you ride in less than pristine conditions (like most NY'ers) then you are going to see some low snow conditions and with only 96 studs you will be more likely to rip a few out then you would be if you had more.

Rule of thumb 1 stud per HP that sled should be about >100hp however as stated that would apply to icy conditions where the studs bite in.

The holes should not hurt anything. I personally would pull the studs and not risk it if they installed them very close to the windows.

thanks

Im almost certain to remove all the studs, we ride alot of road around me, and sometimes the trails up here in the Adirondacks can be pretty narrow and curvy and never know what kind of rocks or stumps are sticking thru in the middle of the woods.. probably best to take them all out...

I normally port my track with a 1-3/8 holesaw, stud holes will not be a problem unless there is a tear out and even then it may be ok.
