I just purchased a 98' Vmax 600 XTC for my step daughter, It had a blown engine and the Mag side Connecting rod snapped cutting the cases like a knife all the way around and also took out the bottom of the cylinder as well. The skirt of the piston was broke on that side but I attributed the engine failure to a seized connecting rod to the crank...even though it moved free now. analizing the damage this seemed to be the most probable cause. I purchased a replacement engine with approx 3500 miles and decided to remove the cylinders to just "check" things out...Low and behold the mag side piston has the skirt broken off!!! Is this a common issue with these twin 600's or is my luck just no good? Why are the skirts breaking...

The 97's had ring issues but i thought that was fixed in 98. I have had both & no problems with the 98. I do notice some spark knock- detonation sometimes so I always run premium fuel. Broken pistons are a good sign of detonation though.
i had a engine in my srx 700 tripple do the exact same thing as you are describeing ..connecting rod cut the case completly in half like a knife took out the reed cage and all olny thing that stopped it was the jug ..i have no idea why this happened bearing on both ends of rod are still good ...just one of them things that cant be explained why it actually happened i guess.....

both of my bearings appear to be good as well...my cylinder didn't stop my rod though, it got destroyed as well! Quite an impressive sight!!!

My problem with my 600 twin was the pin that keeps the rings from spinning around came out, then the ring caught the exhaust port and snapped the ring, then the pieces of the ring got on top of the piston and were smashed to dogshit into the head.
