I'm picking up a 2003 Vmax 600 ER this weekend. Owner says the clutch is engaging at idle and making the sled roll. I had this problem with my 95 Vmax 4. The cure was removing a shim. Could this be the same solution?

Could be that. It also could be a dirty or worn clutch not disingaging all the way, idle too high, or just poor clutch maintenance. Sould be somthing simple to fix it the price is right. CCC

Fatigued clutch spring, my buddies 03 SXR 600 broke a primary clutch spring and had a similar problem... how many miles are on the sled?

2500 miles
removing a shim would lower the engagement RPM so it will engage at a lower RPM.
If it was still moving at idle your idle setting id too high or I would start taking the clutch apart inspecting parts especially the spring or at least replace the spring since its a cheap part.

V belt too tight?

hmm... is the primary sheave open all the way? might be hanging up from a sticky sheave...
