Hi,
I looked at the Tech Pages for cutting a hole in my baffle/exhaust (SX Silencer mod), ...the mod said to use a 2 inch hole cutter, but I only I have a 1 3/4 inch hole cutter. Do I need to go buy a new 2 inch hole cutter or can I stick with my 1 3/4 inch hole cutter? Will there be much of a difference in sound between a 1 3/4 inch versus a 2 inch hole cutter? It's stock exhaust, so I assume I don't need to do some jetting or anything, ...just cut the hole and enjoy the sound.

Thanks...

I don't know if anyones actually experimented with different hole sizes. It would be interesting to do so. You'll be fine with the smaller hole..might even be better..who knows.

I plasma cutted the top off my stock can and removed all the guts. My sled is LOUD! (just to piss off the neighbors). I didnt even have to touch the stock jetting, my sx600r was plenty rich from the start.

I tried the hole saw thing, but I didnt have enough shaft length to get all the way up to were I had to cut.....so I went BIG!

f.y.i. I have another stock pipe when I trail ride up north! Brent

O ya, there is a noticable difference when I swap pipes back and forth. Well sound of course, but I notice performance differences 2. Brent ;)!

I just bought a new 2004 SXVenom last March, it's my first snowmobile ever. I used to ride my buddies sled every now and then (so I'm not a beginner rider) - his family had a couple of sleds.

I asked my Yamaha dealership about the Silencer mod and they didn't recommend it, but then again I'm not surprised (they don't want to get into promoting mods that are free). They said people do it, but they don't recommend it.

If my sled was a few years old, I would do it, ....but where it's brand a new machine (over $10,000 Cdn) and I'm not much of a mechanic, I'm alittle cautious (don't want to ruin the engine before the snow comes).

How long have you been riding your sled with all the guts of your exhaust removed? How do you know when you're sled is "plenty rich from the start", or are all Yamaha sleds rich form the start? I'm assuming that there's no back pressure/jetting issues?

Roger.

there are no reported issues of mechanical failure from boring the stock silencer on this site, and A LOT of people have done it. It adds a few horespower and gives it a little more growl. Do it, you wont be dissappointed.

Checking your plugs for rich/lean. Take your sled out and run it half to full throttle under a load (hold it there for a few seconds alteast) then hit the kill switch. When the sled comes to a stop, pull the plugs and check the color. A white/very light brown plug is lean. If the plug is medium brown to dark brown its running right were it should. If the plug is slightly wet its running rich.

I went from a wet plugs to medium brown after cutting out all my guts from my can. I only run my sled a few seconds on choke when cold otherwise it fowls out plugs. Both of my yamaha's are like that.

Just my opinion. FYI dont drill out your can if you want to keep from getting ticketed in Wisconsin. Last year my can cost me $156.00 in Eagle River Wi.
Brent ;)! (why I run stock when heading north!)

Guys help me out here. Pretty sure the exhaust doesnt need much more back pressure by the time it gets to the silencer. Head pipe takes care of most of that. Im guess that is, because I have nothing put power removing the can gust and running straight thru. Brent :WayCool:

I stand my sled on end jumping and my buddies can hear it miles away...neighbors really like it 2...ha! Brent

if you drill the can, it is not that much louder than stock, and the can still is stock, so if the DNR checks, they can't do anything because it is still the stock exhaust, and they aren't going to know that you drilled out the baffle unless you tell them. I dont know about completely gutting it, i would guess that that makes it A LOT louder than stock, and then they will probably give you some #$%&* about it

viper no....

its my understanding you cant drill the viper silencer, if you are unsure about modifying your silencer, you can send it in to Maxximum Performance and they will do it for you for around 75 bucks, i had my wife 00 sxr 600 done, it made it sound just loud enough... a little extra wiggle....

Hey Max he's got a SX Venom, I read it and was going to reply the same then reread it and seen it was not for a SX Viper.

PS. will I ever get rid of that mini rating!!

If the DNR thinks it to loud they will ticket you stock or not stock. Exhaust wears out, and its the riders responsibility to keep the noise down. Brent

If you have stock exhaust, at least in Wisconsin, the DNR will check and see that it is stock and not give you a ticket. Most stock sleds are over the limit with the current test anyway, this will be the first year with the new test procedure, but most jurisdictions do not have the equipment either

I know that Familyman's exhaust is gutted out, but this 2 inch hole shouldn't make it really loud, ...only a few db'd louder, but not annoyingly loud, correct?

I'm not interested in making my sled much louder than it is now (I don't mind a few db's louder), I just want it to 'growl' more.
