hi i just bought a 2002 SXViper. and i was wondering what i should do to it from the start.
 
Welcome to the site!! First clean carbs, powervalves, wash clutches and belts, fresh gas and plugs. Dont start it after you do all the cleaning or youll have to do it again as it will sit for a while before snow. Depending how much you want to get into it you can take out skid and go through that. More will chime in. Read the tech section, lots of good info. That should keep ya busy for a bit. CCC

You say "wash clutches and belts" with what? where on the different parts or everywhere? and why?

Clutches are most likely full of dust and residue, nice to have everything clean and moving freely and easily. Clean with anything that doesn't leave a residue. I usually use brake cleaner. As for the belts, wash with hot soapy water, gets the factory "film" off the belts per say. As my dad said, just do it and don't ask questions :)

YUP!!!! I put them in the dishwasher with no soap just hi temp. That is all depending on your current living situation. The females of the house tend to frown on that. Then us a green scotch brite pad and scrub the sheaves and i also use that on the belts. Rinse real good and let dry!!. All that belt dust can bind up your clutches and like spinner said good to start clean and moving freely. And like his dad say's "just do it and dont ask questions" LOL!!! CCC
 
ok thanks guys ill do that. ive already taken the suppension out and cranked the shock up. and i have to get new bearing and the two back bogie wheels any ideas on better ones?
 
If you are refering to the transfer rods ( go from top middle wheels to back wheels on rails) they are for weight transfer. They have rings by the silver nuts in the middle. These determin how much weight shifts to the skid upon applying power. No rings showing max transfer. All rings no transfer. Standard is 3 ring if i remember right. Dont have manual in front of me. OEM for the boggies is fine but i dont know if i would have cranked up the rear shock. The 02 vipers ride pretty stiff stock. Just whent through this with my wifes. I would ride it first. I found out that you can be comfy and sitting low or cranked up and looking cool but you will be shopping for a new spine the next day. ccc

So you just spray the clutch all around with brake cleaner and blow off with compressed air?
 
no, take the clutch off, pull the clutch over off, remove spring as it will just come out. spray with brake cleaner and wipe all the dust off and out of everything.

well the person i bought it from had new shocks put in and it was set up for his wife
 
i've never ridden on any yamaha with a plush suspension, always been a downside to them IMO, even though the newer sleds have come a long ways. as car as SXR, SRX, and vipers, they are stiff, even when set up soft. Most certainly doesn't ride like a polaris edge or cat rear. Leave it soft, because even though yamaha say;s its softer, its still really really firm

viper motors have staggered compression on there cylenders to help with the cooling issues on the motor. pto or clutch side should be around 115 psi and the center and mag should be about 125 psi. i belive they stagered the compression due to cooling issues maybe im wrong. im sure someone will chime in.

ok so when redoing the skid i found that one of the bushing where missing and that the shaft up front has worn a "flat" spot in it so going to get new shaft and bushing. anyways ive been reading about the thread and read about a torque limiter can anybody exlain this to me and tell me if and where to get one

They still make them, here are links to dealers that still sell them. I got mine of of ebay. They keep the motor from twisting under power and breaking motor mounts and keep your belts straight. Do a search, lots of info on both of these topics. CCC
