Just picked one up for the wife, looks like a cream puff, very nice clean sled with 4700 miles, all stock. anything to look out for on these? pro's, con's ?
Very quick when clutched.
Pretty reliable
Hard on fuel & clutch bushings.
Sell it & buy a triple...way less issues; smoother engine & a lot easier on fuel.
Did a search and had seen the bad mileage deal. What is the problem? why do they like gas so much? In my experience Yamis have always been very good in the mpg department. Anything you can do do fix the problem? reeds? pipes? are they over jetted? Geared wrong? suspension drag?
I was looking for a 600 triple, but none to be found around my area, for the $$$ i spent.
Been riding this sled for a few weeks, put about 500 miles on it so far, and the mileage is about 13.5, just about the same as my srx 700, so I am happy with that. seems to over rev though, turns about 83-8400 at wot. Also developed a lean knock type sound last weekend, but the plugs look good? any common problems? thinking I got some not so great gas?
7800 is peak rpm for a 500cc twin. i had one clutched to vmaxjhon's set-up and it rocked in the trail. some one might have geared it up already as the 200-01 sx500r where geared down one tooth compared to the 1999 and older sleds. before i geared it i would get 8mpg on a good day and only 80mph. once geared it would get 10-12mpg and 95mph. fuel milage varys with throttle abuse. sounds like your wife is not too hard on it.
throw some seafoam or gasline antifreze in it. might have gotten some water. only time the one i had ever acted up (sold it to brother). and for some strange reason it prefered to have 87 octane over 91. was always more snappy on 87.
