HID's in 2003 Viper ER

Hey guys/gals,

Looking at installing a set of HID headlights in my 2003 Viper ER. Yes it has a battery.

Can you use the Normal kits or do you need to order the Bi-Xenon kit to get high and low beam?

Did you guys install the slim kit or the regular size ballasts.

Where did you mount the ballasts?

Looking for feedback from someone that actually has them installed and running.

Do they fire up no problem when starting the sled with e-start after installing them the plug and play way? ie. with no capacitor or anything else, simply plug em in and fire up your sled.

Any help is much appreciated.

Has anybody else done an HID install? Specifically to a Viper? Looking for a little more info than the previous post before i go out an order a kit.

Anybody?
 
Heard that thereisn't enough power for one and the power is ac rather than dc. I would also like to do the mod to my sled, I wish there was some way to figure this out...
 
I have HID's on my 02 Viper ER. I only used a low beam set up. The beauty of this is your hi/low switch can be used for on/off. I have had no issues with them at all.
 
Just installed a set of Bi-Zenon HID's today on my '02 Viper after I installed my new electric start. The kit I used seems to work OK. I chose the mini balasts because of the room issues. I tywraped all of the wiring in the space under the cluster, it fit real well there. The Bi-zenon control boxes and one balast to the support below the headlights and the other balast in the little opening between the cluster and the headlights. I can shoot a couple of pictures for you if you'd like.

The only problem I am having is when you first fire the sled when the balasts are cold. Only one headlight comes on, but if you let it warm up for a minute, shut off the sled and restart, both come on. I'm not sure why this is, I checked the voltage and there is 14.5 vdc going to the system, but it takes a couple seconds for it to stablize. Gonna check with my 12vdc "guy" and see what he says. Other then that, they seem pretty good!

^^^^^They need a good 12V to fire the HIDs. HIDs use way less power then halogens, BUT....they NEED 12V+ to fire. I have them on my truck and sometimes only one comes on, or one will shut off during cranking in cold weather(it's a diesel). If I was you, I would put a switch in to keep them off until the sled has been running for a few seconds and then turn em on, or install a relay if the sled is an ER. I would seriously consider it too, it's not good for the HIDs to be cycled on/off a lot.

do you have a direct feed off the battery ? IF SO THEN I BET YOU GOT A CHEEP CHINA KIT . BEEN THERE :ban:
 
So I changed my idea a little for powering my GPS and HID's. I ran a 16ga. feed from the battery to a distribution box where I have tied in both the GPS and HID's. Just a little slim-line hobby box to house the diassembled cig adaptor for the GPS and the HID connections. Ty-wraped to the round bumper support right by the hood wiring connectors. Spoke to my 12vc "guy" and he told me there might not have been enough ampeers making it to the balasts to fire them both because of the smaller gauge wire. Well...He was right. No problems now! Both fire right up! I also relocated the balasts together and they are tucked under the cluster.

The direct feed is primaily used for the Hi / Lo and to allow you to use a lower gauge feed from the headlights. It is plug and play to the 3 prong connector and it has the battery feed as well.

I have been using HID's for over 6 years when the kits were first introduced and have 5 vehicles all equipted with HID's. There isn't any real difference in the kits, except for the size of the balasts. I've tried them all and they all have about the same life.

I've heard of people delaying the 2nd light to power up. They claim this helps a lot since so much power is needed to ignite the HID's when cold. There is a writup in here somewhere I looked at last year. This topic is exactlly why I hesitated installing mine. I'm waiting to install my new main harness and battery. Also waiting for someone else to work out the bugs first !! As soon as I find a ring gear I'm putting the electric start back on as well.
 
Looks like a decent kit. Just remember if you want to be able to have low and high beams you need the H4 HI/LO kit. These have a solenoid that moves the bulb in and out to focus the beam. Them ballasts look incredibly small and easy to hide !

Don't need to be driving that fast at night any way..... enjoy,, the deer will get you other wise,,,,,........ lights or not......
 
less of a matter of driving fast at night, just being able to see better at night and be seen better during the day.
