2000 sx700r. just had my mechanic clean the carbs and get her running right.. my 1st year with sled... sled would not idle correctly and was backfiring like crazy. i had to keep burping choke to keep it running.. anyways, mechanic cleaned carbs and started up... states that the tors sensor or whatever it is was bad... said he bypassed it for now.. said i can have him replace it, or i can replace at a later time.... 1st, i know this helps with ice in throttle, but would a bad tors system cause my sled to not idle correctly and force me to have choke open? he states the sled idles perfect now.. where is this switch located? and is it hard for a non mechanic like myself to hook back up and replace? i really trust this mechanic, he is a HUGE Yamaha guy. been fixing and working on them forever and has awsome reputation around here.... He gave me the option of replacing the tors or bypassing, he said its not hurting anything to bypass it and gave me the plus and minuses of bypassing, but he did say 90% of people he knows who have problems with the tor end up bypassing... any input????

i bypassed mine the next day i got it. Its just a safty switch (2 wires on top of the carbs in the middle where the idle screw is located) just unplug them from the switch and the wires going back to the wiring harnest hook them together its that easy. You can do a search on tors and find many people do this

Have 2 97 SXs with the tors bypassed, and an 05 Viper with it bypassed due to a break in the wiring.

Not much of a mechanic if he tells one to by pass a great safety device especially when it's easy to diagnose and repair,do a site search many posts on it.

get it working and keep it working.

just got sled back...

ok, just picked it up from mechanic... he said pilots were plugged...he cleaned them up... also readjusted throttle and oil cables.... and sled idles like a charm now.. as far as tors, he says its a faulty switch... he showed me how to hook back up, and when i hook them back up, the sled wont rev right and backfires... when i bypass it runs fine... what else would cause this? throttle cable is fine, and has alittle slack by the carbs.... can it be a faulty switch? any way to fix this or confirm that it is the switch, and what switch usually goes? he says its the one by the carbs... is this hard for a novice to replace? how does one replace this without ripping carbs apart? details please... i hate to buy a new switch, and find out it wasnt switch.... do these switches get stuck? maybe i can spray wd40 on it? or is it to close to carbs for that? what else would cause that to act up with tors plugged in if throttle cable is good and carbs are cleaned?

try loosening up the cable a bit more first and plug the TORS back in to see if it is still acting up, he might have it a bit tight. (Just something to look at before spending money on a sensor that you may not need)

i can try that

i do know at that throttle it is at 2mm.. should i make it looser then that, and what happens if the throttle cable is too loose? i dont know much about carbs and all that, and dont want to mess myself up more by playing with throttle cable
