Dropped my upper gear from 23 to 22. Just have to get out to the MAN CAVE to get it in. Is a new/shorter chain needed or will the tensioner make up the difference ? Will the old/longer chain not transfer power as well ?
Thanks

If your bottom gear is a 39 tooth you can still use your stock 70 link chain.

It is still stock w/ a 23/40 and 70L chain. Just wanted to drop from the stock 23, down to a 22. I have the 22 gear, was just wondering if I needed a shorter chain before I pulled the trigger on this project?

I'm a thinkin that the 70 linker will be fine. I see other setups on the stock 97 page that are running even smaller that what I will be, and they got a 70L. A 97 XT500 has a 22/39 w/ a 70L. Or a 97 SX600 w/ a 23/39 and a 70L. So a 22/40 should be OK.

Yep, you should be ok, when I went to 39/21 this required a 68 link chain just a fyi.

That good to know. Could find too much info about chains when I did a search.
