helping a friend buy his next sled
are there any studding problems with vipers - what years?
are there really that many crank problems with the 2002's?
are the ER models set up with softer suspension compared with the non ER?
is the 2003 model much better than the 2002?

The 02's were valved pretty stiff,but for $300 Can. you could get a complete set of revalved shocks installed by the dealer.I got them installed on mine at the end of the first year,but ended up putting the originals back on.Mine is an 02 ER that I purchased in 03.I had gotten my originals set up pretty good and really did't care for the way it handled with the new shocks.I really didn't take the time to set them up though.I was used to the old ones and it was easier to change back.As far as cranks go,I don't remember hearing about a lot of bad ones.Had mine running yesturday just under 24,000 klm's without any rebuilds.Only real problem so far was a broken jack shaft.

I think I have talked him out of an RX-1, he is only 13 / 120 pounds. This kid can ride and doesn't beat things - has no problem with his fathers mxz800 or my tuned XC700. I think the viper would be a very good sled for him - he has seriously out grown his 340! We ride some ice covered trails around here and studding is a must. I thought studding was an issue with one year with a ripsaw on it???

If going to a 1.25 ripsaw with studs on any Viper you will need to change to a 8 tooth driver. I run a prestudded 1 inch hacksaw ( Iceclaw) Works great on ice/snow conditions. Make sure you run protectors on the x-changers when using studs.
