Emergency Manual starting

Good Morning, my 14 year old son bought a 2000 sxr 600. We have been going over it and performing all the PM. It does not have an electric start and I was thinking we would be in trouble if the pull cord breaks. Is there a way to start these sleds in the event that the cord should fail? Perhaps we should put a new one on it before the snow hits.

In your tool kit there should be a bar shaped thing (sometimes a screwdriver that has a detachable shank), and a length of nylon webbing. It isn't easy to do, but that is your emergency starter. Basically, you wrap it around the primary clutch and fasten it with a small plastic clip. Obviously no recoil, you get one shot, if it doesn't start, you have to re-wrap it around and try again.

Not exactly the safest method, but it WILL get you started again in an emergency.
 
If you need to do this, it is easier to spread the secondary open & push the belt down in there. Takes some drag off the primary, It will just be a bit sluggish on the take off until the belt rides back to the top.

x2! Great tip! I did this last year in Eagle River with the broken half of my pull rope. Made it 3x's easier than the time I did it before.
 
The small plastic clip attaches to your rope. Make sure your turning the engine over the correct direction.
 
Just checked it out, everything is there as described. I think I will have him change it this week. good learning experience plus it will give us piece of mind. How difficult is it to change. I have the chiltons manual with the instructions but I know the pre load can be a PITA....
 
The hardest part of changing it is usually getting the recoil out. I don't know about your exact sled, but at least on one of mine the bottom bolt is 100% impossible to get to without lifting up the engine. (needless to say that bolt did NOT go back in when I had the engine out for a rebuild)
 
I use a tie down strap around the clutch. It works pretty good. Make sure you wrap it so the motor turns the right way
