Finally starting the rebuild of my '99 SRX 700. Had approx 5700 miles on the sled when I blew the mag side piston last year. Finally got the sled out of storage to start the project. Couple questions re: the rebuild:

1. Should I rebuild top end alone or should I tear apart bottom too? Based upon pics, how much top end metal could find it's way to the bottom end?
2. Replace good pistons or just re-ring?
3. If I re-ring, should I put in a used or new piston to replace blown one?
3. Based upon other cylinder markings any other insight or possible reason for failure?

I appreciate any insight or recommendations you can provide. Let me know if additional pics would help.

Now for the pics:

3. Bad cylinder head:

4. Inside of bottom end (top base). You'll notice a slightly jagged corner by rod.

5. Top view good cylinder (notice color difference?)

6. Interesting find.....gasket mat'l inside PTO side cylinder cooling vent:

well, if your going to keep the sled and would lke to get another 5700 miles out of it, I would tear the entire thing down, replace both crankseals and then of course replace anything needed on the topend. If the (good)pistons have not ever had rings on them, they likely will be under spec when you check them. The best thing is likely a service manual so youll be armed with the specs to check parts against. Since its out(engine) its already half the work done.
