mine vipper whent to 30 000 km till the mag side conecting rod letgo witch was caused by the bend triples i would say u are fine till 25 000 km to open it up run goof oil and stay on top of it u shouldnt have a problem

I was talking to my uncle who has a 98 SRX said he rolled 40 000 last winter, the only time it was ever apart was the recall to weld the cranks. My dad has 26 000 km on his 02 srx, never been apart. I've got 18 000 or so on my viper also never been apart. If you run decent oil and do the proper maintenance there is no reason for it to come apart unless you know you have a problem.

Wow, 40,000kms. That's amazing for a 2-stroke. I just bought an 06 Apex but still have my 01 SRX. Maybe I should have stuck with the SRX a bit longer:)

thanks for the reply guys. now i feel that i dont need to worry about it! what kind of oil are you guys running in yours ?

For what it worth my stepdad just rebuilt his 02 srx and sxr600, sxr had 12000km and the srx had 7000 miles I think. Both motors were still running good but upon disassembly there was alot of blowby and the pistons were out of spec as well as the ring end gap. Both machines were down on power but still showed decent compression.

just tore down my 03 viper with 11,200 miles on it and it looks pretty good. still a little coating on the pistons and the cylinders are shiny and smooth. waiting on lots of parts as the viper is now my sled to tinker with and hopefully my full time river rat if i get it done and the river ever freezes

Amsoil Intercepter is a very good oil to run especially with power valves and it is a synthetic but really oil is a hot topic with some people. If you've had good luck with a certain brand then by all means keep running it,personally I've been through about 5 different brands and the only reason I run Intercepter in my sled right now is because my cousin sells it.I used to run the shell Advance snow Ultra synthetic,I've run ProLab synthetic (harder to get),I still have a few bottles of Castrol synthetic in the shed from when I run that (it was good smelling oil too) and of course Yamalube.
The Intercepter is supposed to be the most power valve friendly but I've read some articles in magazines of some new oils that have pretty lofty claims.

With the amount of miles we put on in a winter expensive oil is out of the question.I just got good at cleaning the valves. On one of our trips I used between 2 and 3 gallons of oil(closer to 3).You can go through a lot of oil in a week when you're running close to the pin most of the day.We did enough miles that I cleaned the valves before we left and then half way through the trip I had to do them again.

yamalube and ringfree and u will be amzed i put a set of PV in my srx last season and ran all season with ringfree and didnt not clean them pulled them out this past week and they looked new and the pistons looked cleaner then ever. ringfree is expensive be worth it wow what a product

just lost (I think) a bearing on my crank at a tad over 9k miles. sad, think the extreme damp we had up north this past year let some rust in. never had any issues like this before. complete tear down will tell if it is rust or just a plain old mechanical failure

Was it fogged when stored?

run out of gas and flooded with oil. just like I have always done. first time in about 25k miles I have ever had a problem, maybe more miles. first crank failure I have ever had on any sled!

I am amazed to hear the high miles on so many Vipers. I just bought a 02 that the center cylinder went down. The lower rod bearing failed, also two other crank bearings are rough. The crank is getting rebuilt, I'm have all 3 cylinders replated, new piston kits, V force reeds, and of coarse all new seals and gaskets. I have heard of about 7 Vipers that have gone down lately in my area, all with under 5000 miles. Is there anything I should change or modify when I put this back together to make it last longer? Has anyone heard of the fuel pump causing them to burn down?

just stay with oem and stop running the sled at WOT for 3 miles. that'll stop most engine meltdowns.

I'd be willing to bet that proper storage and maintanence would have prevented all 7 of them.If you try hard enough or not care enough you can pretty much f*ck up anything no matter how well built. You'd have to go a long way to find something as reliable as these motors.

yeah, I think mine was a storage issue. and that it sat for about a season and a half. storage has never been an issue before, but a real wet summer up north and a long period of not being used I think did it in. I will know for sure when I get a clutch puller and can take the case apart. think maybe the bearing cage may have failed. time will tell.
