Hi
Just bought my first Yamaha Sled
I bought an '03 Viper ER with 1800 miles

Just a couple of questions that Im sure have been answered on here a thousand times so for that i apologize in advance.

What is a good oil to run?
What fuel should I run?Super,regular ?
Should the power valves be checked at this mileage?
Anything I should be looking at before riding it as far a preventitive maintenance goes.

You will hardly have any top end. My friends 2000 SRX was getting it's butt handed to it by my 02 SRX by a good 4 to 5 sled lengths until he cleaned his carbs and PV, now he only loses by 1 to 2 lengths ;)!
 
Anybody ever try Shell Advance Snow Ultra oil.I live in a small town and dont always have access to places to buy other oils.Canadian Tire stocks this stuff
 
So should i excpect to have good service from this sled?
Anything I have read praises Yamahas reliabililty
 
Depends on the shape of the sled when you got it. low milage, so most likely not in bad shape at all. Maintenance is key. You found a resource here at TY that can help you with anything your having issues with. You bought a fantastic sled.
 
Buying a used 2-stroke is a crap shoot at the best of times unless you've known the sled since new.If it was stored properly and serviced in the fall before riding that motor will go a long way with no problems.On the other hand the crank bearings could be rusted after just one summer of improper storage.I'm going to say that IMHO that motor will go as far ( probably farther ) than 98 % of the 2-strokes out there.I personally have just under 24,000 klm's on mine without opening up the motor.


Unless you are using a really good(usually expensive)oil you will need to do your exhaust valves every 1,000 to 1,200 miles or every fall which ever comes first.When you get used to the sled you will be able to tell by the way the motor sounds that the valves are not operating properly and need cleaning.We've had to clean ours half way through a 2,200 mile trip one year(using Yamalube).

Don't know don't care what the compression is.Still gets to 100 mph pretty quick and keeps up to most where I ride.Motor sounds as good as it ever did.I'm to the point now that I want to see how far it will go.We don't do the big trips anymore,so I'm not to worried about it going down around here.We still do 200 mile days,but just around our area.My son rides with me so he can tow me out if neccessary.When it does happen I'll just scrap it.
 
i 100% agree with snowsnake.. i have a 99 700 srx with nearly that amount of km and never had any engine work done.and to this day it takes a fast sled to take her on the lake and trails.i do a lot of guiding and rack up 4500 km on a good year it's still my number one sled.that's a new machine there with a lot of go if properly maintained.best of luck on your new yammie!
 
Great purchase! One of the best looking and performing Yami sleds in the 2-storke world. I'm slightly biased, but you've got yourself a good reliable sled that with hang with the big iron and look good doing it!
