hey guys its been a while since ive been here, i sold my old 88 exciter and now i want to buy another sled, im going to college and its all paid for so now im looking into taking out a student loan and buying a snowmobile, need some help. i either want to buy a rev 800+ or a SXR 600+, i wanted the rev because its a twin and faster but my girlfriend loves to ride so i want something a bit smaller that i can enjoy with her. im asking for suggestions on what kind to get, what there is for mods on them and things to look for that go wrong or some things to look for when buying one and If anyone has on e for sale or knows of one for sale in the New York area please let me know... thanks in advance

i just purchased a 2000 sxr 700

and after doing much research on this fine board, most if not all say bullet proof engine...... awsome trail sled..... might not be the fastest 600 or 700 out there, but would be great on gas, and if maintained will last close to forever... I havent rode mine yet... I too, am in upstate NY.... i do alot of my riding up north by tupper lake(2.5 hr drive north from me)... but i will do some riding in old forge this year also.... but as far as sled, i dont think u can go wrong with these sleds.... just check it over well.....

ok cool, and its nice to find someone from NY, everyone i found was usually from Michigan or way north, the 600 or 700 triples really get better gas then the doodoo twins?

You can't beat the reliability of the SXr. The Ski Doo revs ride a lot smoother, and a rev 600 will probably be faster than a SX700r. The down side of the Ski Doos, is the reliability. The motor on our 04 mxz lasted 4,700 miles before we had to rebuild it, I had over 12,000 on my old SXr and never had to touch the motor. Either sled will be lots of fun :letitsnow

HAHA, ive seen allot of riders get 10,000-15,000 miles on a Yamaha and come to think of it, ive never seen a ski doo with over 7000... im definitely getting a yamaha but im not sure if i should get a viper or sxr, the sxr is more in my price range, ive found them from any wheres from 1200 to like 2200, and cant find a viper for less than 3000, is it that there more powerful or are they more reliable? i want a sled i don't have to rebuild all the time, do the sxr's get that center cylinder blown or what ever one it is? i heard the triples always have a cylinder go bad

The 700 SXr has the redhead NON-powervalve triple in it at about 100hp and the Viper will have the black head powervalve 700 triple in it at about 120hp.

Never heard anything about a Yamaha triple having a cylinder blown unless proper mainteance wasn't done. Have the redhead triple in a sled of ours, didn't rebuild it till 74XX miles. Ran great but we only did it as prevention. Did have a crack in the piston skirt but it was still running.

The reason you find the SXr cheaper is because its an older sled before the Viper came out.

Starting in 04, the Vipers came with DCS (Detonation Control System?) something like that. This is to prevent, just as the name implies, detonation due to poor fuel, etc. Having owned and still owning both a redhead and a Viper, the redhead does require less upkeep since you don't have to worry about cleaning the powervalves, but with that said both very reliable motors. You can see the mileages listed below in my signature of all the sleds I have. The 05's were bought in 07 and first time on snow was winter of 07-08, only rebuilt motor in that group is the high mileaged SX like I described above.

the middle clyinder was a problem in the polaris tripples and i think they acutally gave all tripples a bad rep. i had the same thought running through my head befor i bought my sxr600 and im glad i bought it with no regrets!!

My 2000 700 SXR has almost 11,000 miles on it and I've done nothing to the motor. I just cleaned the carbs in it for the first time. Friend has the same sled with over 12,000 miles without a hiccup...

Mine can still do 100 on the speedo....

I like my sx 700, its about on par with the 04 rev 600HO we have. The rev hooks/accelerates better but the top end may be slightly better on my sx. Had a friend hop on my tripple and I had the rev. I pulled 3-4 sleds with the rev of the line and stayed even until 105mph and then the sx started to catch back up but blew the belt at 105. At that point we were side by side. As for ride there is no comparison. I have yet to drive anything that rides like the rev. Even the new 4 stroke yamaha's don't compare. Both sleds will be close in speed, the ride is going to be much better with the rev though. I have never driven an 800 rev but it seems like there is a lot with rebuilt motors for sale with low kms. The 600HO we have has 10,000miles and has never been touched (other than clutch and reeds). The main difference between the two is going to be the price, the rev will probably cost much more than a sxr. Anyways, thats my insight. Either machine will make a good sled just depends how much you want to spend. As for gas milage, the 600HO was about on par with my 700 with bad carbs so with a good carb I think the sx would get better than the rev. Thats my 2 cents.

I've had my 98 700sx for 3 seasons so far and I love it, it got 14-16 mpg and did 103 on the gps, (the dream-o-meter read 108.) This year it's getting triple pipes and new rear suspension (the suspension is definately the weak link on the proaction Yamaha's). I did have to put a new PTO side bearing on the crank this year, but it was still running w/o outward signs of a problem, I found the problem when I pulled my primary to clean it. I have just under 5000 miles on mine. i should have it all back together by next week.

my 2001 SXR600 is also bulletproof. That sled of mine has been thru everything and nothing ever broke on it.I decided to do a top end rebuild after close to 12,500 km's on the motor.Pistons had blowby. If I wasn't riding it always pinned..it probabbly would of gone to 20,000 km's without an issue or more.My sleds play hard, ditch banging, drift busting, hill climbing, some water skipping and full out runs on the river.I just couldn't burn her down...tough motors.

i dont know why i picture herbert answering the door when you go to "barter" for the sled.
