Need Fuel Line FACTS...

I have been searching and searching for a solid answer on fuel line sizes. Either there isn't one on this site, or I'm not good at searching for one.

I am mainly looking for line size from fuel pump to carbs, but would also like all other specs. if known.

Some say 1/4 and some say 3/16, some say use OEM line, some say use blue translucent, some say you could starve the engine if too small, and some say the fuel line is MM.

I have 1/4" ID blue translucent in hand and it does not seem to stay on as well as I would like. Clips also dont help, would have to use zip ties.

I also have 3/16" ID NAPA fuel line that fits nice and tight, but I am afraid this is too restrictive.

Please point me in the right direction and hit me with cold hard facts.
 
well i tried the blue poly whatever line in 1/4 inch and it was too big on the carb end and i kept getting leaks. i went back to the stock lines until i get my 38mm carbs on they have bigger inlet tubes
 
i got all new lines for everything. at the time dennis kirk was out of one of the sizes. and i got that size on sleazebay. can't remember if it was the 1/4 or not but it probably was. its probably some cheap china stuff that isn't sized right.
 
Motorhead, I found your previous post earlier, and I am also using Parts Unlimited 1/4 ID poly line. Installed line with fuel clips and could pull them right off with minimal effort.

The 3/16 stuff from NAPA fit much tighter but I am concerned about flow rate to carbs, plus I really wanted to use poly.

5/16's would be too large.
 
just tracked my hi perf engineering tracking # (contains 3 different sizes of poly tubing from 1/8 to 1/4), and i can have a definate answer for you tomorrow. i too am replacing the 3 lines from the fuel pump to the carbs, but also the highway of tubing that connects each carb.
 
That ends up being between 1/4 and 5/16. Does anyone know what the OEM stuff is made of?

Is using 3/16 poly going to hurt anything flow wise? Still no comments on restrictive flow issues?
 
7mm is 0.2756 inches. 3/16 is 0.1875, and 5/16 is 0.3125. 1/4 is 0.2500 which is only 0.0256 wider, will be just fine.

Plus, the plastics will shrink with age., and heat will increase the shrink rate.

And if you are not doing it already, when you go to put plastic lines on, take a coffee cup with water, put it in the micro for 2 minutes, and dip the end of your line in there for a little while, and it will be nice and pliable for you to slip on (until it cools back down).
 
so the poly fuel line showed up today (seems more like vinyl to me).... the 1/8 ID was way too small for the carb vents. i used the 3/16 ID for that, but had to use small ties at each connection. oh well. the fuel pump to the carbs, the 1/4 ID was perfect!!! i reused the stock clamps as they had a good fit as well.

i must admit the color looks bad a$$, but don't really care, cause it's not like i ride with the hood open! i am glad to toss the hard, stiff and cracking 12 year old tubing in the trash.

Just so you guys know, that blue poly is okay but not as good as the stock lines. It too will harden and crack over time.

Personally I like fuel line from Motion Pro that is similar to what Yamaha uses stock. I would love to find a supplier of the exact same stuff Yamaha uses stock. This is about the best fuel line for a sled that I have found.
