LIFE MEMBER ONLY ONCE!!!
I have stock 8DN-20's loaded with 4.5g rivets in both holes.Running the
W-W-W primary spring also.Using a 54/44 helix with Green Spring at 70 for starters.Installed this last night, have't run it yet.
Then I read on the tech pages this setup as a low buck setup.
Stock weights with 4.5g rivets in both holes.Use a stock primary spring.Use the 54/44 helix with a Silver Spring wrapped at 60.
Isn't a Silver Spring really to stiff to run.I thought guys only use them on grass or asphalt.I do have a couple Silver Springs here in case I could use them.
Anyone tried this setup with the Silver and how did it perform? Thanks.

I want to use the above setup for everyday riding. But am going to set up my 8Bu-10's with 50/40 helix on my spare clutches,so when there is enough hardpacked areas to go..I will open her up and see what she will do.
Right now there is not a good base around anywhere yet,so 54/44 will be my choice for now..just wandering about the springs in that setup..that's all.

Doug, silver springs are used in grass drags, but also when running a helix w/steeper angles like a 54/44. You will need a spring w/slightly more side pressure and that can still provide good backshift. Hence the reason turk recommends the silver spring w/that setup in the tech pages. Also, I think you'll want the stock y/w/y spring back in there. You prolly run like 8350 or so w/the w/w/w spring.

I slipped the belt at full shift with a Hauck Green (supposed to be same) with wraps up to 90 on my 54/44 with those weights. I'm also 260 so that could have contributed a little. ![Excercise :EXER: :EXER:](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/keyboard.gif)

Yeah it will be nice to do some radar runs, last year I could only hit 86 but ive already hit that on my speedo, and the xtc still pulling so maybe she will still see 95 w that track.

first we will try a 70 wrap with that green spring, will bring rpm's down slightly and maybe less belt slip since your clutches were a little hot.If that doesn't do it ,we shall increase the rivet weight in the clutch.Maybe 4.5g..but don't know if it should be placed in inner or outer holes yet.I think for your sled you are supposed to be 8300 wot.
I am thinking probably in the inner hole to get initial launch rpm down.

well I tested the 54/44 helix today..not impressed so far.Stock weights loaded up with y-w-y primary(stock) and silver at 60.Motor is lugged down with that setup. She wants to go ,but rpm's only at 8000-8100 at wot for a little while.Launch goes to maybe 7900-8000,drops fast to 7500 and back up to 8-8100.
Also tried green at 70 wrap..seems a little more pull, but rpm's on top are the same.My stock 47 was in the right rpm range last weekend.Mind you I am not holding her pinned for to long..still breakin it in..lol...yeah right.
Might as well put the 47 back in for now until I put a few more miles on for break in.It seems more responsive.

This is where I get lost with clutching. I have those 8dn-20's you sold me in with 4.5, 4.5 with a washer to make 5.5 in the tip. I have the stock y/w/y spring in the primary and a red dalton spring in the secondary wrapped at 80 and running a 53/43 hauck helix. I have 23/39 gears and 8 tooth drivers in. My problem is that I'm overreving to about 8900 rpm. Your set up is halffast close to mine but I'm overreving and you are underrevving... Why would that be? Because of my gearing?bluemonster1 said:well I tested the 54/44 helix today..not impressed so far.Stock weights loaded up with y-w-y primary(stock) and silver at 60.Motor is lugged down with that setup. She wants to go ,but rpm's only at 8000-8100 at wot for a little while.Launch goes to maybe 7900-8000,drops fast to 7500 and back up to 8-8100.

if I put back in my 51/43 I may be dead on.Originally the 51/43 has a slight over-rev,but with loaded weights it should be fine. And in milder temps it worked great. That is what I used a few season's ago on a plus 7 C day and had my best runs of 118 on the speedo.Ever since then I have tried numerous different set-ups and just can't get things to run smooth.HC's,8BU-00..no good runs.Seems like the straight 47 was good for me.
I am thinking the silver spring and 60 wrap are screwing me this time.It is like I am going from 1st gear into 3rd or 4th.I am missing that screaming feeling I had with this sled the first day I got it.
I haven't done any long wot pulls of course, but can feel it holding back with the rpm's,even at lauch feels a little sluggish.Clutching is a mystery to me,don't really understand how helix's really work, but try and go with the flow on them.![Head Bang :o| :o|](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/banghead.gif)

you answered your own question. Your 8 tooth drivers REMOVE load off the engine because it now takes the stock 23/38-1.65 gears and makes them into a 1.86 ratio. So anytime you remove load from the engine, its gonna require more clutch weight to bring rpm back down. Also having a shallower finish angle will require more tip weight to bring rpm back down. Stock helix was 47 degrees, your now finishing the shift at 43 degrees.
you have a couple options open to you:
replace the primary spring with a w/w/w this will lower topend rpm. your stock y/w/y spring is 45/128, this w/w/w/ is 45/119
add more tip weight-more washers under rivet.
