working on a buddies 96 xt and hae a little bit of a hanging idle. cleaned carbs and may do it again. but sometimes it will just stick around 3000 rpm's. could it just be some old gas in the lines or should I check anything else.

Idle hang usually means a lean condition. Check both carb boots for fit and cracks, if you need to, spray a little carb cleaner at boots if idle changes you have a leak. If your stock 2 turns out on screws is spec to your good their. What is your idle set at? Should be at about 1500 +/- . If idle set too high it will hang a bit also. CCC
Check for air leaks! Around the carb boots as described above, and crank seal

also having the same problem on same year and model. already checked for leaks and cleaned the carbs. only hangs up if you ease off the throttle. then it will hang but if you just let the throttle go from say half way and let it snap back then it doesn't hang. also there is no tention on the cable at any time when the throttle is in idleing postion. i checked the TORS botton for sticking and it seems free. also when carbs where off everything seemed free and not sticky.
any ideas?

check carb sync may be off. screws that hold slide may be loose. plus all above
