Help With Skid Doo Skid

Picked up a SC3 (2002 HPG VR) skid and have a pretty good idea of how to place it in the sled properly but want advice from those of you that have done it. Please throw at me any war stories and measurement #'s that you have and tell me how yours turned out and how it rode. I am not positive which sled my skid came out of so I am investigating my spring rates and have a feeling I will need stiffer springs and a the shocks revalved. Any advice/info will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a friend that has a Doo with a SC10III? I would advise taking the measurements from an installed skid because the center to center dimension of the two mounting points will be different when the skid is not mounted. But you will want to take into consideration that you have a short travel suspended front end(ski suspension) and may have to adjust from there. It may just mean pulling up on the limiter straps to give you the proper ski pressure,or flipping your SRX ski shock mounts to add the extra hieght.
Take a look at my Cat skid mounting instructions to get an idea, its works great on my Viper. Huge difference over the stock skid, but the right mounting locations are the key!

Actually my brother has a 2001 MXZ that I was taking measurements from last night. But I just wanted some cross reference material. For instance when measuring I noticed the distance difference between my skid unmounted and his mounted and found out through a search on here that I do need to preload the skid slightly when mounting and use the installed dimensions off his tunnel. I have my front shock brackets flipped already because I currently have a viper rear end in it. I am debating whether to put a whole viper front end on my SRX (Pioneer kit) and use a drop down mount at the rear or leave it lower with the rear mount just rearward of the current bolt point but still above the running board. I am not real worried about losing some turning ability because I have a boss seat and flatter bend bars with a riser which allows me to get up over the front end in the turns. I am most interested in getting this thing to eat up bumpy terrain better!
 
Replace the inside bearing or at least check it out on the rear axle middle wheel!They like to sieze to the shaft and found the torch was needed to cut it off.Other than that easy install hardest thing is removeing front yamy brackets.

If you use a drop bracket and lower the rear mounting point, you will increase your ski pressure, especially if you add more travel to the front end. But you should be able to tune it out with spring preload and limiter strap adjustments.

To determine weather or not to use drop brackets, lift both sled's rearends just enough to take out any set in. Dont lift the track off the ground. Compare the hieght of the rear mounting bolt off a level surface(concrete) and also the hieght of the drive axle,you dont want these distances to change by much when mounting the skid into your sled. If I remember correctly, my Viper and Cat were only about 1/2" difference, so I kept the mounting point above the running board. This help keep the rear of my sled close to stock hieght,which also made it easy to tune the sled for the correct balance of ski pressure and traction.
But also take into consideration the distance from the rear mount to the top of your tunnel, you dont want this to be less then the Doo chassis,or there may be clearence issues when bottoming out the suspension.

Makes sense, thank you very much for the advice!
 
I am not a fan of drop brackets but admit it makes the sled look cool and would serve a purpose in deep snow.They are used in later model sleds to level them out with the higher front ends that come with the them.But with trailing arms sleds there is only so high you can go before binding happens if you wanted to level the sled out.

With the front brackets flipped and running the ohhins shocks i had to pull the front limiters one hole to keep the sled from hanging the skis in the air when good traction was there.This helped alot and would think the front axle highth could go up a inch fron the bottom of the cooler rail if you did not flip the front brackets.

Change the wheels to another colour and scrape off the sticker on the rails most people would never no it has been changed out.
 
Purchase a couple front mounting brackets,, about $10.00... When you go to get rid of sled stick your old skid back in...

I have to admit I might put it on the drop brackets along with the pioneer front end just to see what happens (beside it potentially looking cool :) I am sure that it will take some tuning and experimenting but that is part of the fun of doing this because I am a noob at sleds but have a lot of experience with mx bikes and if I learned one thing with those suspensions is that you are always looking for that elusive one click that makes it perfect!

Good advice ... at the rate I'm spending dough right now another ten is nothing!
