Broken steering post!

So I snapped off my steering post today,right at the top where the flat mount connects to the post, had to kick the skis the whole way home:o| lol. Do I have to remove the motor to change the post? Is it possible to change without removing the motor? I could weld it up on the sled but then I probally would have a flaming yammi! any suggestions?
 
all i did was get a piece of pipe and weld it the plate and then drilled 2 holes in the stem and plug welded the pipe to my stem and then weld all the way around it , then your good to go, I also gave my self a 2'' rise , oh ya you have to remove the seat and gas tank to do this safely good luck
 
kirk with your luck lately,you better think of giving up snowmobiling and get into Dog Sledding.Get a nice team of dogs and they will steer for you,no more pistons to blow,carb cleaning,oil and gas..etc
 
I have welded them on the sled removeing only the seat.Welding blanket over the tank and a sheet of steel with a slot cut out so it slides around the steering post and the sparks roll were the seat was.Leave the hood up and cover the moter with another blanket.Slide a pipe inside as mentioned and weld the top.It will save a days labour pulling the moter and sutch.

Sounds like a good idea Doug! I was thinking about selling the sleds and getting tracks for my 2 quads! Our winters up here are getting worst every year. I bet Cains quest will be cancelled again. I flipped my sled right back over, knocking the wind out of myself. I still have the mountain Srx while i get the steering post fixed.

sounds like fun doing back flips..you still walking I guess.Ya Cain's Quest may have to be moved over here maybe around Churchill.Ya we got early snow,but not the greatest for riding.Open waterways yet,hard drifts everywhere now especially after the cold snap we are getting.SRX is sitting for now,not even good conditions to ride it.That's ok,love riding my ditch banger 600 at lot more..I just give her all the time and softer ride.I love going off the trail.hills,drifts,ice,ditches.More fun then just running down a smooth trail.I just stick around here,don't ever buy trail passes..waste of $125 for me.
 
Yeah I'm not much of a trail kinda guy either! I still buy my passes for those slow rides that the wife wants to go on ! Guess the motor is coming out of the srx for the 3rd time this winter! might as well replace it instead of repairing!
 
I can't remember the name of it, but there is this stuff in an aerosol can that you can spray on the surronding area and you can weld what you need to without causing damage to the area. Furnace guys use it for when they solder the Air Conditioning copper lines to the fittings on the coil on top of the furnace, and they don't as much as blemish the nice looking coil cabinet.

And if you TIG weld it, the heat affected area will be very small to begin with.

It's like a two part name and if I remember right, it's like Something-Cool. Very amazing stuff, but I don't think you can get it at Walmart.
 
Heat Fence

Here's another heat barrier that may be used during welding/brazing/etc. I've used it to protect the throttle block/grips, etc on handlebars when welding in a crossbar or from other damage (too big of a, er, jump). It's a paste that was applied adjacent to the weld area, and it worked great, still cold on the other side and much of the paste was reusable.

The link shows the stuff, although I don't know anything about the company in the link, I just Googled Heat Fence. I bought mine from a local welding supply house.

the heat resistant paste is called thermo trap.... it works exceptional. its made by nu-calgon. only available at a hvac or refrigeration wholesaler. good luck
