key broke in the housing and in the drive shaft - any hints on how to get it out of the drive shaft ???

Drill it or use a self tapping screw, no more than a 3/16. Thread the screw in and pry the adaptor out. I went through this last year. I ended up with a small bit, working my way up in size until the adapter spun out on the drill bit.
