98 srx 700 recoil rope keeps breaking

Does anyone know how to properly route the recoil rope on a 98 srx 700?
This is the 6th rope I have put on this thing and something keeps tearing it up.
I even put a whole new recoil on it.
Does it run above the chain case or on the side of it?

there is a notch for it on the chaincase, should have a metal tab bolted on to keep the rope from coming out of the groove.It should be fairly obvious where it routes.

the tab is rounded on the cover of the chaincase, the bracket that holds the coolant hose above the brake caliper covers the horseshoe shape in the chaincase that is where the rope should route......
