1997 SX 600 red top triple, ran 8DN 00 for 2 years no problem then bought a new belt, could only find 8dn-01. Installed went for a ride and now my idle is at 2100 RPMS, over revs to 9000 rpms and squeels at idle. Also if I go reall fast and stop the idle hangs at 4000rpms then drops slowly. Sleds rolls too at idle.
Is this just belt tension, seem the 8dn 01 id 2 mm wider then the 8dn-00.
Thanks in advance.

It sounds to me you have a couple different items working. As per the belt deflection, squeel. The seconday has adjustments for this. When you remove the secondary, you will find three bolts. These bolts have washers under the head, As you remove a washer from each bolt and then reinstall this moves the sheaves further apart, allowing for proper belt deflection. As the belt wears you can reinstall the washers to locate the belt in the proper placement on the secondary. Al

as al said..adjust for new belt.Usually no washers behind them 3 bolts with new belt.As belt wears and level drops on 2ndary..add .5 or 1.0 mm washers as needed. As for fast idle ,adjust your idle down a bit with the idle adj. screw on carbs.Make sur your throttle cable also has slack in it at idle.It has been brought up that this faster idle is usually on single pipe sleds where when the pipe is hot after a good ride, the efficiency of the pipe being hot somehow brings up the rpm at idle area.My 600 does have that fast idle problem to..just have to live with it.When you flick the choke to drop the idle, fuel is now cooling off the exhaust pipe also and drops idle.
Thank you, I notice some washers in the back. I will remove them and check things out. The old 8dn was at 33mm and my new 8dn-01 is 34.5 or 35mm.
As for idle Ill try droping it down a bit and see where it brings me. What should my belt deflection be? Flush or just below?
Would belt defelction cause a sudden over rev? Belt being to tight or too high in secondary?

I bet your old belt was a smooth top and the new is corrogated, I noticed this on our sleds, and just adjusted as needed. I like keeping the belt riding as high as possible without any squeel or pull. Al

as Al stated again.Adjust until squeal is gone.Your center to center clutch measurement is critical to,but you need a tool to set that up right. If done right, with back end of sled on a stand..your track should jerk or rotate by itself during engine idle also.As long as your track tension isn't super tight. On both my sleds the track rotates nicely by itself and no belt squeal also.
To get rid of the idle hang turn out your fuel screws in the carbs some more.

Did you was the new belt with soap and warm water? I'd try that first before making adjustments.
is this something that is common, cuz i just put a new gates extreme on my viper last night and i followed the 15 mile break in as best as i could keeping below 50 mph and not cracking on it too hard....i didnt have any squeek or dogging it seemed but i did smell some sorta belt burning smell
Well its fix thanks to all.... dropped the belt a bit in the secondary 1mm over sheave When new belt was put in the rpms jumped to 2100RPM droped it to 1600RPM. Properly centered the clutch and squeal and over rev gone. Hang gone as well.
Everything seems to be ok now.
Thanks again
