Studding a new Ripsaw 1 1/4" Track SRX

I just purchased a 2002 SRX 700 with a new 1 1/4" Ripsaw track. I'm not looking to make this thing an ice racer, just want to have better traction on hard packed icy trails. I was thinking about putting about 96 studs in but am not sure what length I need or can get away with due to clearance. Any thoughts? I quickly looked underneath and did not see any tunnel protectors. I thought I read somewhere that they came standard with them?

In order to run that 1.25 track you either remove them or modify them. Sounds like the previous owner took them off. To add studs now is a crap shoot where you better keep the track nice and snugged up. The protectors can be put back in with some modification (cutting them down).
 
Thanks for the info...I think I'm going to run it without stubs for this season. Try something new.

Actually I was referring to the front exchanger protectors when I said modify or remove them. I am not sure about the tunnel protectors. And all of you guys that have time to tell somebody to use the search could take the time to give a little advice or include a link!

Are you suggesting that someone else do the searching and then also provide a link?


IMO - if all the protectors are missing I would not stud the machine regardless of track tension. Studding a 1.25" track on a machine without front and rear HX and tunnel protectors and changing to 8 tooth drivers is asking for trouble.

No I am not suggesting you do the work for them but I see threads with multiple "search" comments and feel that if you have the time and energy to tell them to do a search you might have time to give them more help than that, thats all. :flag:

Sorry for being sarcastic, but the same questions keep coming up over and over every year regarding a sled that hasn't been made in 8-10 years and if a search was performed, the answer would have been found.

It comes off as being lazy. In fact I've seen some threads that start off with "I'm too lazy to search so here's my question".

I can only speak for myself but I'd suspect that many here don't mind helping those who help themselves first.

Shoot, it's easy enough to fool me by saying "I searched and searched but couldn't find". In that case your search skills may be questioned, but not your initiative.

Guess I'm feeling a bit cranky today but it is a bit annoying to see the same questions year after year with no appearance of performing a search first.

No prob snomofo! I was being a bit defensive and I am a bit of a beginer with these sleds and I do try to do my own searching first. But sometimes I either don't find the answer I am looking for or I get swamped by what I find and need a fresh perspective from somebody. I find it really cool that there is so much going on with these sleds 10 years later... they are really fun to own and nothing sounds like one!:rocks:
 
That was my first time on the forum, I guess I didn't know how handy the "search" feature was. I was not trying to be lazy, just did not know how to find the information I was looking for. Sorry to cause any problems...

Wow thats a nice welcome to TY! Dang no sugar coated mambi pambi there... My 2 cents on this is if you are going to talk a bunch of smack and not leave any help, why even begin being a problem? Better yet why even click on the post when you know your going to leave a nasty comment. This just confuses me... :bash:
 
Jerbish, I want to welcome you to the forum, you will find a wealth of knowledge here for you sled. Literally you can read for hours on end and still find more helpfull info. It really is a friendly environment here. There are just a few topics on here that have been beaten like a rented mule every year, thats all....no biggie. Dont be afraid to ask questions.

I have a 1.25 with pics, my pics are only a fraction longer than the partially worn track. I still have my tunnel protectors and modified heat exchangers in and it clears. Barely, and I keep my track pretty tight, but it can be done. Hope that helps. Again welcome an dont hesitate to ask questions if you cant figure it out.

Guess we're getting old and cranky like our sleds !! But then, the more snow, the less cranky I am....go figure !!!! We need more snow here in Michigan !!!!!!!! :letitsnow

No problems JerBish. I was a newbie once and the response to my first post was "search is your friend". I didn't know about the search function until someone pointed it out. I didn't take offense to it but perhaps some do.

I usually subscribe to the rule "if all you have is something nasty to say, keep it to yourself". And until thunder commented on other's "search" response I kept my mouth shut.

Anyhow, welcome. We really are a bunch of nice folks...well, except for Gary ;>)

If you can't find what you're looking for searching old posts or the tech section, ask away.

Now grab some tissues you cry baby ;>)
 
My BIL hit this spot on sunday and had a nice mess of panfish. Hope to do the same. Can't stay long as we have poker tomorrow night!
