Just bought a 95 Vmax 500 and it has 3000 km on it. Had it out the other day and it was burning about twice as much fuel as a Mach 1 700 (Think it was a 99). I have replaced the choke springs as they needed to be done. Was just looking for any other thoughts or suggestions as I assume they are not typically that bad on fuel.
Thanks

make sure the needle clips are in the correct position. When i bought mine, the previous owner didn't know how to count, he put the clip 2 from the bottom instead of 2 from the top. It was pig rich at less than full throttle and burned through tons of fuel.
sled is not good for mpg you will average 10-13 depending on riding conditions and style you ride .......... so dont worry that is average......

If you can get 10-13 like whammy said your doing good. I get that or close with my 96xt. Way back they had a few mods to improve this but i cant remember anymore. Leaned out the needles, thinned the headgasket. Carbon fiber reeds. DO a search and i bet you should find a fair bit of info. It also wakes up the sled a bit. CCC
TRying to keep up with the 700 is your problem

95 VMax Fuel hog
I also bought a 95 vmax and my first ride out this season was 5 mpg. I heard they suck gas but didn't expect it to be that aweful. The previous owner omitted one of the gaskets when he installed the exhaust manifold and the engine is completely covered in burnt oil indicating to me that the machine is running way to rich (I did'nt have a chance to check the plugs color and did order new gaskets). CAN I MOVE THE NEEDLE CLIP TO LEAN THE MIXTURE, WHICH WAY AND COULD THAT CAUSE DAMAGE? IS THERE A FUEL ADJUSTMENT SCREW ON THESE CARBS?

those vmaxes were very rich from factory, I would check what is in the carbs for jets. I have a '94 500 and I put 140's in for mains. I live in canada and have no ethanol though. They came with 151.3's from factory, personally I would start at 147.5's and try that. You can change the clips to lean it out. I would take baby steps, maybe a 1/2 clip at a time. Raising your clips will lower the needle and make it leaner. 5 MPG is horrible, my vmax-4 gets better than that, so something needs attention. There is also a fuel adjustment screw on the bottom of the carbs. Setting should be at 1 and 1/8 of a turn out from lightly seated.
I am wondering how my '95 Vmax will be on fuel. I just got it and haven't even ridden it yet. Mine has a GYT pipe/manifold and Boyesen reeds with 153.8 main jets. Not sure where the the needle clip is right now. I would have to look.

i have a 94 600 vmax, and it is amazing on fuel. i can run almost all day on 20$ at 98 -99 cents a litre. on the other hand we also have a 98 vmax xt600 and it is a hog, easily uses twice the fuel mine does.

my '95 vmax 600 is very good on fuel also. Its FAR better than my '01 AC zr 600 efi.
(of course, the wife rides the vmax, I get the zr, so that might have a LITTLE to do with it... )

Vmax's are jetted rich from the factory. I had a 95 Vmax 600 before my Viper. Bought it new in 96 and rode it 8,000+ miles. First 4,500 was bone stock. Got 10-12 mpg. With the 10 gallon tank, I even had to put on a rear rack and a 2 gallon extra gas can to stay with my buddies on my Canadian adventures to make sure I could make it from Searchmont to halfway haven, and then up to WaWa. Each leg was 100+ miles.
Then in 2004, I put in a Bender clutch kit w/helix, rejetted a jet size or two leaner, moved the clips (not sure which way) per the clutch kit instructions, and put in a 1" hack saw track. WOW!, it really woke up the sled and my mileage went to 12-13 mpg since the sled was more in the power band, and the track hooked up much better. On an easy trip with some newbies I even got 14 mpg on the Searchmont -> Halfway Haven -> WaWa trip. I really enjoyed the sled after that!
Just be sure to make sure and not jet too lean. Watch your plugs, and make sure they burn dark reddish brown, and not white.....
