Help......98 Srx 700 Issue

Ok, this is my first post on ty. I must say this is a awesome site full of information. Ok, here we go. I have a 1998 SRX 700, this is my first REAL sled. I was riding my old school 86' Indy Trail Fan.....lol :) It has 3900 miles on it. I had it out on the trail this morning and it was running great, hit 85-90 mph a couple of times Man these things RIP! Then I noticed a coolant burning smell. So I stopped the sled and noticed a nice steamy/exhaust mixture coming from the exhaust pipe for the cylinder near the clutch. And then noticed the nice vapor trail behind me blowing across the field. Took the sled home, and pulled the plug on all 3 cylinders. 2 had a brownish color, the problematic cylinder was soaked with a oily coolant mixture. The cylinder has compression, but I noticed a section of the Orange o-ring that was deteriorated. Is this my problem? What would cause this to fail all of a sudden?

I have not pulled the head yet, i didn't notice an external coolant leak from the base gasket, or the dome gasket, but when i pulled the dome off i saw the oring had a spot on it about a 1/2 inch where it was worn. What would cause this to happen. It does not look burned or anything.
 
carbs are clean too. It was running great, then I noticed the coolant smell and shut it down, I could see the pipe for the cylinder blowing the burning coolant, and this is how i traced the problem to that specific cylinder.
 
worn out -- flat spot in gasket replace and hope your good to go......

Get a new O ring and get a full sheet of 320 grit sand paper and place it on a flat surface like your kitchen counter (I use a glass cutting board - who's idea was it to use glass for a cutting board - can you say dull knives).

Place the head on the paper and run it across the paper in a figure 8 and look for areas not cleaned up. A few passes across the paper should clean most of the seal surface. If you only see a few small areas clean the head is warped. You could try a few more passes across the paper and maybe put it on the sled but if it's too warped it'll leak. For the price of an O-ring it's worth a try.
 
Right on. I've been in the powersports industry for a while now, Im just fresh to these triple cylinder sleds. I was concerned the problem could be something else, but like I said i pulled the head, and the inner orange o-ring had a portion of it that was deteriorated. I also noticed on the piston top was stamped std. Is that for standard bore?

Well, I Got The O-ring In My Hand. I Will Drop It In After Work. Anyone Know The Torque Specs For The Head? Pattern?

sorry to be off topic but i hijacked my mothers glass cutting board for thios reason who the hell thought up a knife dulling cutting board, but it works great as a flat surface in my shop
 
Sorry guys. About the glass cutting boards: they come with a plastic sheet you put on top of it to cut. You can lift it off the glass and drop ypur chopped stuff right into a pot etc., or just move it to the sink to rinse it off. And the plastic sheet usually gets lost after a while.
Great forum, great wealth of info. Keep it up, you quite possibly saved me a bunch of money for power loss/plug fouling problem on my 2000 SRX!

Hmm... don't remember a plastic sheet but I didn't buy it (she probably threw it away). And if you have the plastic sheet, what do you need the glass cutting board for? LOL

I recommend a wet torque. Tighten to 5lbs, then to 10lbs, and finish at 20lbs. Don't know your specific torque sequence but i think if you use common sense and be uniform & consistent you'll be just fine. Make sure to check it again after some riding... they will need to be snugged up to 20lbs again.
 
Use a criss cross pattern when tightening light you would use on a vehicle tire and use a 3 step tightening sequence like the above post.
 
OK THANKS GUYS, IT WAS DOING FINE FOR ABOUT 100 MILES, TOOK IT OUT IN THE FIELD LAST NIGHT, AFTER ABOUT 6 WIDE OPEN PASSES.......I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE ON THE SAME CYLINDER......I WILL PULL THE HEAD TONIGHT AND LET YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I SEE. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AGAIN!

we need to start a glass cutting board thread im upset lets just use the plastic sheet why buy the board???



btw sounds like your head is not flat bring it to a machine shop to confirm or do the cutting board/sandpaper trick and see what you get
 
ok, in the process of removing my cylinder head i dropped a bolt into the belly pan, reach down to get it and hmmm.....i notice a couple of chunks of aluminum. Hard to describe these broken pieces, but one clearly has 6 stamped on it. They look to have a smooth curved section to them and are grooved very badly. Im not sure if this is a piece from my crankcase? the sled ran normal with no crazy noises until i noticed it staming again. To me the pieces look like i threw a rod through the block, or scattered a crank......but it ran ok.....i don't know.
