A buddy of had two 02 vipers, 1 had 14k on it and the other had 16500 on it.
They both ran good when he sold them. A little weak, but still ran.
I have an 02 viper ER with 4200 on it. Runs great!!!

The SRX is fast, but odd to see that many things replaced. The Viper is a few years newer, and stock. I personally think it's best to buy stock, and then do what you want with it. Who knows what's been done with the modified sled.

to me it doesnt sound like the srx was modified, it was Maintained... the viper will need new valves or will eventually get pull throughs, the srx guy fixed that "known problem" i bet if more people checked thier skids they would need all need bushings and etc... bet if you took that viper skid out it would need some tlc too gauranteed...tgillespie said:I am looking at an 01 SRX with 4900 miles for 2600 or an 04 viper S with 6k miles for 3200, which is the better deal? The viper is a single owner machine all the miles were put on it by a woman. The SRX has a long travel shock from a 04 viper, new bushings in the skid, new bearings in the chain case and on drive axle, re built clutches and the power valves were sent out and had stainless steal heads put on them so the cable doesnt pull through. Which one would you go with?
i dont see any mods that srx sounds like someone that knew the sled and what they need

The valves won't pull through for a long long time if properly adjusted and cleaned when needed.I doubt very much the suspension will need bushings anytime soon if it was looked after either(probably the odd brg). The guy has raised the rear of the sled and not mentioned doing anything to the front to match the rear.Got to look at the whole package to keep the geometry right and make it work the way it was designed to.
I wasn't going to bring it up,but the Viper is better looking as well.

I agree with MattyG, the SRX sounds to be "Maintained" rather than "Modded". A lot of guys have long traveled their SRX's on this site, many have sent in powervalves to Yamahead to get the SS Bolt mod, who wants to deal with a pull-thru mid-season? I go through the bearings on my sleds at 4k-5k miles, re-rung/new piston my Viper at 5k miles. It might have been early, but my SRX had 6000 miles on a set of rings and one decided to let go, took the piston and cylinder out with it. That can end a season real early.
I'd buy em both, lol... I had a 98 SRX and have an 02 Viper, I wouldnt buy another 98-99 SRX, I hate the headlight, but a 00-02 had the good headlight, which are almost as good as the Viper headlights. The seats on the SRX's are good, but the 04 Vipers are better (IMO). Comparing those things you are just cutting hairs between em, the real question is do you want 120hp or 140hp?
I opted for 120, because I like the looks of the Viper, and it made a great sleeper, im still waiting to line up with an 01 SRX just to surprise em a bit

Just bought a 02 viper with 8300 miles on it. runs mint and looks sharp as hell. Not sure what the previos owner did for maint or if he rebuilt the top end,but it has perfect compression. Sweet Sled
I have a 02 Viper ER with abot 7000 miles. Still runs great except I believe I have a Stator problem at the moment, but all in all a good runner till now.

12,000 kms on my Viper and SRX without an engine issue (touch wood) . Both great machines but I would take the Viper S.

One of the keys to bottom-end longevity is how it is stored in the summer. Fogged with oil and kept out of the elements or out of a high moisture environment (e.g. trailer that isn't vented, back yard, etc.) the bearings should be kept free from rust. These cranks will go a long ways properly maintained. 10,000 miles is nothing. The top-ends should be done as rings and piston skirts wear, but that is expected in any 2-stroke engine. Both sleds are excellent, but could use upgrades to the skid.

when my 99's stock engine hit 15000km's I threw new rings as a precautinary measure. other than that, she was clean and still had lots of power.
