Recently I cleaned the carbs on this sled. It wouldn't idle without choking it. Used the tech section here and it was pretty easy. Cleared up the problem. Sled idled perfectly, rode around the yard a bit with no issues. Well, rode the sled today about 30 miles, ran perfect. After that, it wouldn't idle without giving it gas. Made it back to truck fine. Sled runs great at higher rpms, just won't idle. And when you do try to let it idle, it chugs. The rpm gauge reads nothing and the headlight is barely lit. It eventually dies. But if you give her some gas, she wakes up! Ok TY techs...diagnose away!!!

I'm going to start by cleaning the carbs again. It does have fresh gas. Any other suggestions?

Thought of that but the idle adjustment is tight...as in it has not changed. Something happened to make it all of a sudden run like this. Maybe if I clean out the pilot jets I'll find something....I hope!

I agree, likley you could have picked up a little piece of crap in one of the pilots. Check them and make sure the float bowls don't have any crud in them.
Same thing has happened to me several times, always the pilots.

Main needle screens? Where are those? Maybe I did clean them. I followed the directions from the tech section on this site. When I cleaned them a few weeks ago I took the main jet out and cleaned it. Don't remember a screen.

On another site someone mentioned just buying new pilot jets. Do you guys think that's worth it? When I cleaned them before, I saw nothing, I used a bristle from a wire brush, carb cleaner and compressed air to clean them. I could see light from all the holes....and they weren't plugged to begin with! (but the sled ran perfect after cleaning, so I did something right!) Not the money in buying the jets its the travel time and gas!

Great post. Thanks for the info. I didn't clean them the first time. Probably should. 10 year old sled with 11,000 miles....

Just cleaned the carbs again. Sled idles perfect again. A touch over 2000 rpm. Ran it around the yard and it seems fine. I really didn't see anything. The only thing I would question was the middle carb air bleed screw. Carb cleaner wouldn't go through it until I blasted it with compressed air. Then it flowed. Could that have been the problem?

I did not clean the carb screens because I did not know how to take the floats off. I didn't know if I was supposed to bend the wire tabs or what. So I left them. But now that bothers me! I don't think that was my problem but you never know and they should be cleaned.

Thanks for all your help guys! Hopefully I won't be back with this issue again!

that blockage may very well have been a contributing factor, if not the root cause of your issues. as for removing the floats to access the needle, seat and screens, there are 2 "towers" on the carb and the float is attached to these via a pin. look close, you will see it. remove this pin and the needle come off with the float, allowing access to the seat. pull the seat and the screen is attached to the underside. the pin sometimes need a little help from a punch. just be careful and gentle, support the towers while lightly tapping the pin. there is a head on one side so use the punch on the opposite end.
