98 SRX 600 will not idle, shuts off instead

Okay, I've been reading the forum for some time now trying to figure this one out before asking.

Sled is a 98 SRX 600. I have cleaned the carbs extensively and they are very clean. Airbox too. Boots are all good and tight. Plugs are good, no fouling yet with 200 miles on already this season. Open throttle she screams and speed is good. Power valves aren't horrible but I'm cleaning them again tonight.

My problem: when coming to a stop, or after I start the sled (even when warm), it will not idle. Just wants to clunk out. If I flip the choke up it will start with one pull but I have to constantly feather the throttle to keep this thing running. Sled ran like this for my sister and bro-in-law which is why I got a "deal" on it.

My neighbors old 95 VMax 600 that he doesn't take care of will sit and idle all day long.

What could I be missing? I have a brand new fuel pump from an SRX 700 on which helped alleviate the "lots of pulling to start" issue many people have faced. PSI on 1 and 2 are 125 and 3 is at 115. Had one plug foul but I was first running BR9ES plugs since I was waiting for my BR9ECS plugs to come in via UPS.

It will idle with the choke on but it still drops so low that I will have to feather it to keep it running. Honestly, I have seriously cleaned the carbs well in accordance with the documentation on the forums. They are very clean. I kept them out for 2 weeks with repeated cleanings to make sure the sled would run well.

When I start it choked, it will go up to 4k rpm's and drop down and then I'll flip the choke off and on. In either case the idle comes up to about 4k, and then will drop down and it dies.
 
Yes, I did pull the pilots and clean them.

As far as the screen I don't have that screw hold down on my SRX. I recall the hole brass piece unscrews and there is a smaller screen.

Guess I'm going to have to pull them again and double check. But I went through all the small ports with copper wire and compressed air. Perhaps something was sucked in after it was all put together but I'll rip them apart again.

I'll post my findings after I work on this tonight. Thanks for the suggestions.

Check what size pilot jets you have, just to make sure someone didn't put smaller ones in. Also check where the fuel screws are set at. I'm not sure what the setting on them should be, not familiar with a 600, but it can be looked up in the Tech section or someone will chime in.

Since flipping the choke helps the issue, you're lean on the idle circuit. Now, I know you said you cleaned the pilots, BUT...you have to look through them and make sure you can see a nice, round hole after they've been "cleaned". Many times I couldn't get gunk out of them with just cleaner or air, had to actually run a small wire like from a wire brush into them to break it loose and then finish with cleaner and air. Tony also hinted at this. Many times I've had friends or coworkers who tell me their sled has this issue and they've cleaned the carbs, I end up going over and pulling their carbs back off and find that the pilots are still blocked. When I first started cleaning my own carbs I was also burned by this a couple times.
 
It definately sounds like the pilots are plugged. With the new 10% ethanol gas that evaporates faster over the summer, the oil mix residue gets left behind and plugs them. I have done this fix on multiple sleds many, many times.
 
this same thing happened to mine sled this year. she would only run on choke but would rev out. 2 pilot jets were clogged. thing runs mint now
 
make sure you can either see light thorugh the jets ... for me its the best way to make sure theu are clean so many times ive seen people think their cabs are clean just to do them again!!
