Yamaha SRX 700 1998 FIRE !!

Some Questions:

1] have you tried bypassing the "TORS"

2] Why was the engine rebuilt?

3] During Rebuild:
-was the flywheel removed?
-was stator removed?
-were crank seals replaced?

4] have you done a compression test?

5] have you tried a different CDI?

6] do you have any other electrical problems like tach not working right, headlights, ect?

-was stator removed? Yes

4] have you done a compression test? Yes and the compression is good

5] have you tried a different CDI? No, but it's a good Idea, I'll try soon !

6] do you have any other electrical problems like tach not working right, headlights, ect?

Yep, fuel gauge not working and temp. light + oil light always flashing

OK...first thing you have to check is the wiring harness for a rub through or pinched/broken wires, if you do a search on "wiring harness rub through" you will find lots of info and advice on this. Also go over all the connectors and ensure everything is plugged in correctly.

You may have to pull the flywheel and check that the stator is secure and was not damaged during reassembly.

Check that the flywheel keyway is inplace and the flywheel is not damaged.

Just some ideas of what may be causing this as it sure seems to be electrical/wiring related.

hmmm, read over this thread and its interesting, I have had a hard time comprehending it,maybe some language barrier hampering(no offense meant). With you saying other things dont work sure sounds like a wiring harness issue which can definitely make a intermittent spark problem. That would definitely cause a backfire, as the motor is still running, pulling fuel in when losing spark then the spark comes back on and the fuel is unburnt,booom.

if it were me working on this sled, I would pull the harness and see whats going on chaffed wires are likely resulting problems for the other electrical componets not operating and cutting spark to the cdi making it backfire.

question:does the tach seem to work correctly?, how about if you switch the headlight from low beam to high beam and the sled running, does it make the tach flutter or make the engine miss?
