Is there anywhere I can download a rebuild manual for an 01 srx 700 on here. I've looked at a few, but it seems that there isn't one for an 01 700 specifically.

As shown in the pictures, the pison and one of the rings broke into pieces. I assume its prettymuch necessary for me to split the crankcase and clean it out? I REALLY want to avoid doing this.

When you get the piston out, post some more pictures of the dome, underside, and sides. If you could post some pictures of the tops of the other pistons, that would help as well.
Just curious, is the power valve on the damaged cylinder still intact, all in one peice, is the cable pulled through?

Its hard to tell, but it looks like the piston crown is erroded on the exhaust side which would be an indication of a lean condition which would have led to the damage.
Have a good look at the crank rod bearing on that cylinder. The bearing could have come appart and caused the initial damage.
It could be as simple as the ring hooking the exhaust port but on smaller bore engines I have not found it very common unless the exhaust port has been widened out too much.
Is the ring stop pin still in place?

I will check to see if the ring pin is still in place. Thanks a lot for the help.

As far as what caused the damage, this cylinder was backfiring lightly before I took it out (after having difficulty starting). It seemed to stop after running for a shirt bit, so I assumed there was just excess gas in the crankcase.

I'm now wondering if the backfiring was sings that the engine was going bad before I took it out, or if it continued backfiring (without me noticing) and thats what caused it to go.

The backfiring was most likely a symptom of the piston/ring damage not a cause. The damaged piston looks like you can see the bare metal in the centre another sign that it may have been lean...no carbon build up.

Ive had almost the exact same thing happen twice on my center cylinder. You would think i took those pics. I also notice that the power valve on the center cylinder was damaged after the first blow-up, we cleaned it up and put it back in. Is it possible that the power valve is catching the rings and causing this damage. Im scared to build this again without finding out what caused it. Oh ya, I got 25 miles out of re-build. on teardown i noticed antifreeze in the crankcase. We did a pressure test on it and it leaked badly on base gasket.

My plan of attack is replacing the jug / piston with a used good condition stock bore jug / piston. I am pulling the engine and hopefully splitting the case tomorrow. I will give it a thorough cleaning with oil and air. While it is out I'm going to power wash the engine bay. I cleaned the carbs 2 weeks ago, but I'm going to give that cylinder a very detailed once over.

After I'm done, I may consider selling it or trading it in; though I would really like to keep it, I really like the sled, and like the idea of having 2 stroke (because I have confidence digging into problems).

If tomorrow I find out the crank is shot (I don't think it is), I think I'm done with this sled. We shall see.

Where's the best place to get circlips and what size do I need? Chances are I'm going to mess a few up pulling them off.

DONT EVER reuse those wrist pin circlips. Its ugly when one falls out and gets between the piston and cylinder.

your yamaha dealer likely has them in stock, if you need the part number I can post it for you. they are for a 20mm pin, so they fit dirtbikes, watercraft, etc.

many of the experts here I am sure will post they have reused them with no troubles, I assure you as someone who builds snomobile engines for a living, your playing with fire doing so.

EDIT ADD:- part number is -93450-21053-00

i love to play with fire    :ORC

Thanks. Yea, I've reused them many times in the past, but for this application I don't want to mess around.
