Hey all, I have a '97 600SX with 9927 one-owner miles on it that seems to have developed an oil usage issue. We rode 113 miles last week one day and the sled used almost 2 quarts of injector oil. He was right on par with the rest of us as far as gas consumption and there was no sign of any leakage, plugs looked ok and sled seemed to run well. I had it in the shop over the weekend cable was adjusted properly and there was no mess around the exhaust manifold, had 120 psi in both cylinders. Had a fella tell me that sometimes the pump will fail and when it does it goes into a full-open mode, ever heard of this? No snow here so I haven't had the chance to ride it any, just that one day. Seems to run well on the stand and starts easily and idles nice. Any ideas?

Yes. That is what happens when the pump fails, it fails wide open.

Is there any way to check the pump or just replace it? How much of a job is it?

The wide open pump fail mode, is that just for that year or does that apply to other years? I am just wandering as I have a 96 and 2 94 vmax.
just questioning a question but he said the plugs look ok ...now wouldnt they be soaked in oil if the pump is bad???

Pulled the old pump and found the drive gear rounded off pretty badly, dont know if you can see it in this pic, found a used pump off a wrecked sled with 3200 miles on it gonna put that in this afternoon and give her a try. Finally have a little snow here to test it out.

Oil pump failures on most models results in oil pump being wide open. I had an Ovation years ago that this happened on.
On the Ovation, we pulled the motor to get at the oil pump (and I think I bent a phillips screw driver at 90 degrees to make remval/installation easier.)

Wow what a difference, sled runs better starts easier and after nearly a hundred miles seems to be back to the oil sipper it used to be. This was definitely the answer. Thanks for the help guys. Now the speedo is not working...
